Hello, I applied to University of Minnesota's chemical engineering program early September and have not received a decision yet. Some of my other friends have received admissions although for different programs, I have a 3.659 weighted GPA and a 29 ACT(34 Math). Should I expect to get in or should I shift focus on other schools. Do they accept students with better credentials first?

UMinn ChemE: High match

For CSE at UMN, your ACT is below the average of 31. Are you in state? What is your class rank? They have started updating the acceptance status of some students with higher credentials since 10/14, however, most students may hear the result in the next 2-3 months as the priority application deadline is 12/15. Also, you apply to the CSE with your primary interest in ChemE, but you are not applying to the ChemE program directly. Since ChemE has the highest national ranking among all majors within CSE with a very significant margin, I’ll expect it to be very competitive. For CSE, you should be a high match for in state, and a low reach for oos. See the freshmen profile at the link below:

Thank you very much, I appreciate it

Thank you for replying. My school no longer has class rank, and I am out of state (Illinois), my high school is ranked perenially as top 25 in Illinois, would you know if that would help me?

Hi, I got accepted yesterday to CSE in CompSci. If your scores aren’t up there, make sure everything else is. My scores were well below the average and I still got in (most likely) because of my Recs and Essay (which you definitely should do, even though they aren’t required).

I think you are in no problem.

There is no essay for Minnesota and LOR is not required. I doubt if they will weight too much on them as most, if not all, applicants do not submit that. Also, the acceptance only shows CSE without specifying major.

THank you.
