Admission by Exception

Anyone have any experience with this? I just found out that I won't be able to get into college math until summer quarter (which is obviously past the spring quarter deadline). I've emailed all the campuses and asked what I can do, and they basically brushed me off (or didn't reply at all). I hated the UC applications. They were sterile and I don't feel they asked enough questions...though I suppose they have the right to focus more on a strict class/grade-in-that-class admissions policy......

Anyway, if anyone has any info, I'd really appreciate it. I just spent a lot of money, along with time, effort, hard work, etc, to apply (and be qualified to apply) and JUST found out about this. I'm pretty torn up, as you can imagine, and I'm trying to figure out if there's anything I can (or need) to do.

well, what's the reason you will not be able to get into that class? is it full? did you fulfill the prereq?, etc. i wouldn't bet on being admitted by exception. if i were you, i'd be trying to get that class.

Because I haven't fulfilled the prerequisites. I'm on a funky schedule (didn't start until spring quarter because I took a year off from school to help care for my niece and nephew while my sister went back to school after getting a divorce) and have to take classes that are only offered one quarter per year (history classes, etc.) Math classes are offered year-round, but I placed lower in math than I was expecting. I'm a bit frustrated by the entire thing...I don't really understand why they require these classes be finished by spring quarter. They offer summer classes - it is common sense that classes should be finished by the end of summer.

But....again, it's their right to enforce their policy. I'm just looking for options if they're available.

maybe you should consider taking the prereq during the winter session, and the required class during spring sem (you can even consider going to different cc's to do it this way).

i found these sites that may be of use to you:
GUIDELINES FOR IMPLEMENTATION OF UNIVERSITY POLICY ON UNDERGRADUATE ADMISSIONS
http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/news/compreview/exception.pdf

when you know for sure that you won't be able to complete this class, you should begin speaking to people familiar with admission policies. if you're considering ucla, i can recommend some people that have helped me.

also, there is this website:
exguides

Those were really helpful, thanks. I am fully conscious of how difficult it is to transfer into these schools as an out of state student, but it is of great comfort to know that there is SOME flexibility in their policies. At least it's not a guaranteed rejection.
