Admission chance?

Hey guys, this is my first post on CC so let's see how this goes....

I'm currently a junior in a public high school in North Carolina, and I was wondering what my chances were like in getting accepted to UT?

I am enrolled in the IB program, and have also taken AP courses.
This year, I am taking IB Spanish Language, IB Theory of Knowledge, IB History of the Americas, IB English 11, IB Chemistry, AP U.S Government, and H. Pre-Cal. I Have A's for every class.
My GPA on the 6 point scale from all four years will be a 5.1 by the end of the year, and I've only gotten two B's- in AP Statistics and AP European.
I'm well in the top 5% of my grade. I'm involved in sports, clubs, etc.
I've only taken two AP exams, Stats and European, and have gotten 4's on both. This year I will take IB tests and AP tests in U.S and Government.
My SAT score is a 1400 out of 1600 from my first test.

I know the information is confusing, but does anyone know the likelyhood of me being accepted? I know not many people get accepted out of state, but I'm trying my hardest to build up a solid resume!

Any help would be GREAT!

Sounds like you have a great chance. Just keep up with the deadlines and apply as soon as you can. Like the scholarship deadline is usually December 1st.

Especially, the dreaded FAFSA. D:

Good luck!

I think you have a good shot, your SAT score is pretty good.(1400 is great score for your first try, im sure you can do better though) Your chance of getting admitted isn’t the highest but it isn’t the lowest. Perfect your essays and go for it!

Thanks a lot!
What would be some good things to add on to my resume?
I’m taking SAT 2’s in U.S and Math 1 or 2 on June 5th, and I believe i’ll do well on them.

It’s hard to know these things because not many people from NC apply to Texas!

You can add some extracurricular activities like Quiz Bowl, FBLA, play any musical instruments?? can add that too. And the important with the extracurricular activities is to show you have been at the club/society/hobby for quite a few years. maybe some leadership roles in those clubs or competitions participated in the clubs help too.

Agree with xtra, extracurricular activities such as having an important role in a foundation is looked upon heavily. Make sure you include the values of UT austin and how they compare with your own in your essays. Good luck.

Write all the essays: The two that are required and the one optional one. This may sound like excess, but it has advantages. a) shows that you have interest in the school b) if it is between you and another person and you have the third essay, it can only help you. And, this essay may fit as another essay for another school, again showing that you did not waste your time.

Academic wise you look pretty solid to me. Good gpa, rigor of schedule, SAT score(could be higher if you take it again, but I think what you have right now would suffice. wouldn’t hurt to take it again to improve.)

And listen to the people above, the extracurriculars are important.

So my verdict on your chances of acceptance: you will be competitive for any of the schools at UT. Engineering and business would be most difficult.

I would recommend you to apply for early admission that way your chances would improve a lot!

Wait why are you thinking of going to UT from North Carolina? Do you not like UNC? Because I’m pretty sure its a better school than UT and instate you will save a lot of $.

@justwondering246

Why would you say UNC is a better school than UT? I don’t disagree with you that it makes sense for the OP to consider UNC as a first option due to the savings, but how do you know that the OP doesn’t want to attend a program at UT that is better than UNC? Nationally, they are regarded as similar “elite” public institutions. But what about individual areas of study such as engineering, CS or business where I think UT has an edge?

UNC (in rankings) is generally considered a bit better than UT. But, rankings don’t tell the whole and UT has McCombs and Cockrell to help it. You really can’t go wrong with either, except UNC would be a bit cheaper for the OP. You definitely have a strong application, what do you plan to major in?

applying early has little to no effect, a ton of us CAP kids applied early but still got CAPd

and UNC imo is just as good as UT, cant go wrong with either

UNC is better than UT, if the OP is going to come back home after college.
