Admission chances at Middlebury plus...

I just finished my sophomore year of high school and started searching for colleges. I really love Middlebury because I want to double major in two foreign languages (probably Russian and German). Middlebury is my number one choice, but I also like Swarthmore, the University of Chicago, and Brown University. I just want to know if I have a shot at making it into one of these colleges.

-Positive Peer Influence member since 6th grade (helps with school functions and promotes a positive environment)
-NHS-just had inductions this spring so only for juniors and seniors at my school
-Will be a manager of the girl's tennis team
-Over 35 hours and counting for tutoring children in my community who cannot read or have difficulties. I will be doing a lot of tutoring this summer.

I really want to get into Middlebury because language is my passion (my bookshelf has everthing- Russian, German, Chinese, Finnish, Icelandic, Italian, Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian (if I learn Bosnian, I could help at a local hospice center with translating for new immigrants in the area) Thanks for looking over my stuff and please be honest. And if you think there would be a better school for me, please let me know.

I think that your chances are good at any of college choices. Do you plan on playing tennis is college? Note that Midd was the NCAA Div. 3 champion this past season.

My son just graduated from Midd and will be doing graduate work at Wash U. Let me know if you have any specific questions about Midd and I’ll have him pm you.

Thanks for the comment. I thought about playing tennis in college, but I don’t think I am good enough to be on the team. But I might just be selling myself short. I was wondering what your son’s favorite things about Midd was and I hope he enjoys St. Louis- tell him he must try toasted ravioli and provel cheese on The Hill, visit the nearby Forest Park, and enjoy a concrete at Ted Drew’s.

It seems like you should have an excellent chance. I’ve heard that the Russian department is amazing. One thing that is great about Midd is J-term. Some languages allow you to start during J-term (i.e. Portugese, Italian) when you are only taking that one class. Other languages more advanced semesters during J-term which allows you to really focus and have more time for language tables and other language-focused activities.

I also just finished my sophomore year and was wondering what my chances of getting into Middlebury are.

I have not yet taken the SAT which could make it difficult to determine if I could get in.

EC:

 • Volunteering for two clubs with an officer position in one of them.
 • Math Honor Society
 • Varsity Track (4 years total)
 • Varsity Field Hockey (3 years total)
 • JV Lacrosse (3 years total)
 • 4 years total of Radio club
 • Volunteering/leadership for 2 years for an organization at my synagogue

No one here could tell you with certainty that you could get in even if you had taken the SAT. Your GPA is in the range, but your ECs are weak. There is nothing that stands out in that list that tells me anything about your individual interests and passions. Obtaining an “officer” position honestly does nothing if obtaining that position was your primary motive for even joining a certain association in the first place.

What I would recommend is to make a list of things you’re passionate about. Take your interests to the next level by doing some kind of internship, fundraising, anything. Continue to do well academically, write strong reflective essays in the future, aim for a 2180+ on the SAT. Seeing how you’re a rising junior, I wouldn’t even get overwhelmed at this point about your chances at a specific college. Just work hard in school and do well on the SAT for this coming year.
