Admission Chances

Sorry about spamming the board with another chances thread. I'm curious about my chances to determine whether or not I should apply to Reed. (Currently a high school junior)

GPA: 3.5 (UW, yeah, it's pretty bad) 4.1 (W)
SAT: 2370 (800 Math, 800 Writing, 770 Critical Reading) (Plan on retake)
AP's: Currently enrolled in 4 AP classes, self studying for 3 others.
Last year took: AP Biology (self-taught) (5)

This year taking: AP Calculus AB, AP Chemistry, AP European History, AP US History, AP World History, AP Spanish Language, AP Language and Composition.

Next year will be taking: AP English Literature, AP Calculus BC, AP Physics B, AP Government, AP Macroeconomics

SAT II: Biology (770), World History (800)

E.C.'s:
Boy Scouts (Eagle Scout)
Karate for 7 years (Black Belt)
800+ hours of volunteer work
Water Polo for 3 years

Other:
Not sure if these matter, but:
Multi-instrumentalist: (Piano, Guitar, Bass, Drums, Flute, all self-taught)
Polyglot: (Learned Spanish in school, almost fluent. Taught myself Latin and French at a conversation level)

So, what do you think? Reed is by far my top choice, and I'm a bit worried that the grades will hinder me far too much. Thanks so much, in advance!

You’re fine. I had a 3.5UW GPA (which, FYI, really is not that bad; expect that or lower should you be accepted to/decide to attend Reed) and was accepted last year. Just make sure to have multiple people to read your essays (ask parents, friends, and especially teachers for feedback) and schedule a visit and interview if you have not done them already.

Okay, thanks so much! I feel a lot better now about my chances.

I got in with a 3.5 GPA and a 32 ACT
Show them you care, especially in the Why Reed essay  combined with your GPA, scores, comments, and list of courses, it should help!

Whoa. You sound totally awesome. Please don’t be silly and retake the SAT. Buy a homeless guy lunch instead or something. I think you’ll be in at Reed with little trouble.

To retake the SAT at 2370 is akin to retaking a test when you got a 97 or 98…at a certain point (around 2250), it just becomes pointless to retake because you’re talking about a difference of only a few questions.

That said, your GPA is a-ok. What gets you into Reed is your essays; you have to have passion for Reed and for learning for learning’s sake. Now, don’t try to fabricate that in your essay…If it’s not genuine, I wouldn’t apply in the first place.

But, don’t let me make you second guess yourself, please :)
