I'm an applicant from India, and have applied to Harvard, Columbia, Dartmouth, Yale, Princeton, Brown and UPenn, amongst the Universities.
I've also applied to the following LAC's: Williams, Bates, Colgate, Grinnell, Swarthmore, Reed and Carleton.

I want to major in Physics, and my scores and co-curriculars are as follows:

SAT 1: 2150
Math Level 2:800
Physics and Chemistry: 770

My school transcripts placed me at the top 1% of my class for my 9th and 10th years. However, results have slid down badly over past 1.5 years.

My Co-Curriculars include:
30 odd wins at city, regional and national level at quizzing events.
Several leadership posts at school.
Have won a few national level essay/creative writing competitions, and a handful of national/city level debates and/or Model United Nations conferences.
Over the past 2 months I have received decent ranks in 3 Olympiads, which are held in India, and 7 other countries.
I have helped at a home for the elderly, and have helped to educate underprivileged children from city slums.
....etc.

Now, I was deferred by harvard, but that was before my scores for my second SAT Subject Test attempts came in. Would the all-knowing netizens of CC chance this poor soul?

To be noted… I need full/near-full financial aid.

Which school/city are you from? Colleges read apps school and city wise so that can make all the difference.

Apart from that your app looks good, its hard to predict cause at top colleges it depends a lot on the rest of the applicant pool, but asking for aid at need aware schools may hurt your chances somewhat.

thank you. I’m from kolkata btw.
the thing is, after harvard deferred
me, i.ve sent in the math 2 800 score, as well as
my olympiad results. In addition one of my school techers and a senior of mine who’s a
harvard grad, sent in recommendations for me.
How does that factor into raising my chances?
Out of the places i.ve applied to, harvard,
princeton, grinnell, and upenn seen to attract me
the most.

Most colleges read their regular applications before going back to deferrals. On top of that, Harvard and Princeton both deferred around 2/3rds of their early pool. The stuff you sent will certainly help you, but at colleges with close to 40,000 apps, the acceptance rate is extremely low and even lower for deferred candidates. I doubt HYP take more than 4-6 Indians a year, so getting in there is difficult from every perspective.

You would probably have a really good shot at Grinnell, since your stats are well above their averages. Penn is harder considering you fall right in their middle range, but you have applied for aid which is likely to hurt you at most need aware colleges.

Sorry for the disturbance. what are my chances of getting into a college

i wanted to know whether i have a chance in any of the universities listed below for mechanical engineering

UCSB
UCD
UCI
virgnia tech
TEXAS a&M
Ut austin
U MICH
drexel
uni of pacific

NO FINANCIAL AID OR SCHOLARSHIP needed

International student

plz reply back

tastycles what do you say about my chances at reed, brown, columbia, colgate or swarthmore? Also, any idea about their aid scenario?

Please chance me too:(

@betgeriganu: your stats are, to be completely honest, a little less than ideal. However, if your essays were good and the competition from your school/city/state is less due to fewer applicants you would make the cut at some of the institutions. Plus, mechanical engineering doesn’t see as many apps as say electrical engineering or computer engineering so that’s bound to help you.

@astrobling: I don’t know much about Reed or Colgate. As for Brown, Columbia, and Swarthmore, they don’t accept students who asked for aid unless they are able to provide that aid. Given that, a lot depends on how many people applied there from your school, and the rest of the country, not to mention their entire applicant pool. Considering a major chunk of the class of 2016 is already filled at these schools, applying early might have been more favourable to your chances. Schools which consistently send students abroad (and as you’re from Kolkata, places like La Martiniere etc) have a good rep at US schools, so if you go there that will contribute to your app as well.

hmmmm. I see. Thank you. now, i’ll just wait and watch. Dunno if it was a mistake on my part or not, but i didn’t app to cornell.

@tastycles - i feel like i wont get in UC’s or UMICH and UT austin due to ACT scores but what about TAMU . do i think i have a chance because their acceptance is like 69% and i dont think so many internationals will apply there for mechanical engg…
