Admission Chances?

Can you give me my admissions chances?

Regular Decision

GPA: 4.87 weighted, 3.92 unweighted

Course Rigor: For my freshman and sophomore years, I went to a small rural school which offered very few advanced classes. For junior and senior years I went to a selective boarding school which offered many more advanced classes. I got a few B's at this school.

AP's: APUSH - High A
AP Enviro Sci - A
AP Psychology - A
AP Bio - low A
AP Stats - A
BC Calculus - A
Some of my other courses were not AP but are listed as above AP. One was an independent study class on American politics.

Rank: My school does not rank. Before, I was first.

ACT: 33 Composite, 34 Math and Science, 32 English and Reading

SAT: 760 Math, 760 Reading, 710 Writing

Intended Double Major: Engineering and American History

Damn. Well, I’m thrilled for you. You seem like a great, well-rounded candidate. I hope you get in; I likely won’t. Good luck!

Your numbers and extracurriculars are very solid, but it is impossible to “give you your chances” without taking into account your essays, which are enormously important in determining whether an applicant gets accepted or not. Even if we read them, however, it would still be a mere guess that we could offer you since the admissions people at Swat might view them differently.

I’d say that it all depends on your essays. Your extra-curriculars seem a bit scattered, but it may be ok. Good luck!

Your stats and ECs put you in the mix but because you didn’t apply ED 1 or II Swarthmore may not be willing to waste an offer on you, doubting your interest. Your essays were your opportunity to convince them otherwise.

you’re very well-rounded. i would write an essay about one of your passions/ECs to let admissions know who you really are.

i got my scores! i got a 2040 in the SAT and 33 in the ACT. i’m confident that i can improve my sat to a 2200 and act to 34/5 because i made careless mistakes (e.g. forgot to pace myself, so ran out of time)

not on topic, but anyone have any idea what Rachel Yang decided? Damn new york times…

You look like you stand a good chance :]

But just fyi, I don’t think there is such thing as a major in American history. Swat offers a general major in history, and I guess you could have American history as a concentration or something.

your combined math and reading score is excellent. you should try to bring up writing

Oh and about Rachel Yang:
<a href=“daily.swarthmore.edu domain has changed”>daily.swarthmore.edu domain has changed;

swat hardly looks at writing score, if not ignores it. don’t waste time/money bringing it up when you’re already in the 700s.

do you have any hooks? engine double major could be appealing.

swat doesn’t have an american history major… you would be a history major and concentrate on american. unless you’re going for very specific majors your intended major means almost nothing on the app. as admissions loves to point out… most students come in undecided.

also to the person who got a good score on the act and a still good but not as good score on the SAT… don’t waste your time or money taking the SAT again… it’s a waste of money/time and will not make a diff especially given solid act score… or a better way to look at it is why not concentrate on improving ACT score as opposed to spreading yourself thinly when the gains are negligible (for an improved SAT score)

You should definitely apply!
