Admission Chances?

First off: I posted in the Chances section, but thought I should try here as well. If this is a problem, feel free to close this thread.

Secondly, I have chosen U of M as my school of choice because of the vast array of majors they offer, and I'm a bit undecided.

Here are my standings:

3.8 GPA (one more year left; 2 AP classes next year, so it should go up significantly)
29 ACT score

Clubs:

Student Council
Youth Advisory Council
National Honor's Society
Business Professional's of America
Art Club
French Club

Here are the factors that are worrying me: No leadership positions in any clubs, I know I can easily run and get positions my Senior (next) year, but it may be "too late".

Also, my course load/rigor in HS has been less than stellar. I never took Biology (botany and zoology instead), and because of that, I went into the suggested course of "Conceptal Chem". I realized what a big mistake that was, so as a senior I am either going to go back and take Chemistry, or Physics. No AP's my junior year, but partly because it is very difficult to fit these in your schedule at my school until your senior year, but it could have been done.

I plan on applying for LSA RC French.

Here is my Senior Schedule as of now

AP History
AP English
Pre-Calculus
Physics
French 3
Art 3

Thanks everyone! Also, I'm a Michigan Resident, and know I can easily reach the early app deadline.
Bc2015 is offline

I don’t have a ton of knowledge of chances, but I’d say that your ACT is average (think I’ve seen that stat somewhere). I don’t know how your GPA will rank because they have changed that, but it is pretty solid (if you went to a good private school and are ranked rather high that makes it even better).

I’d say you have a good chance, apply, you will defiantly be looked at closely and at least on the boarder line

just get some leadership, they are the leaders and the best

Yea I definitely missed the boat on leadership positions my junior year. I will for sure be in the top 20% of my school by graduation, probably top 10 if I can squeeze AP Gov in my schedule instead of art for a semester. My school has relatively low scores on standardized tests. Out of the 200 students in the 2010 class, 4 are going to U of M.

I would say match since instate, but if other people in your school took more AP classes than you and do not have much difference in GPA compared to yours, you are at a disadvantage. colleges look at course rigor very carefully.

I know my rigor sort of failed as jr year is the most important, but I really am committed to making it up my senior year.

My thinking was I would be waitlisted, then in once they got 1st semester grades or something.

Right now I’m just focusing on getting some kick ass essays  haha. I know at least two teachers I am close to that I have had multiple years that would write some great recs too.

On paper, It seems like I should get in, but we all know U of M can surprise us in their admission decisions haha I’ll just try my hardest and hope for the best.

Thoughts on ACT retake? I have a same HS friend that got in this year with a 25, but his schedule was much more rigorous than mine.

Edit: I also wanted to thank you guys for even responding. Just as a new member of this site I have seen how many of these types of threads there are.

I would consider an act retake. The downside is that you are going to have to send it to them (if you apply early). Can you list your GPA out by year. If you have a good upward trend or just struggled in one class i would imagine that you would be a bit more of a match.

And did your school offer honors classes?

Freshmen: 3.40 (because of a D in Algebra 1, Geometry avg = A, Alg 2 avg = A. I got B’s and C’s in my final grades; after that (soph and jr I got all A’s or A-'s.))
Sophomore: 4.0
Junior: 3.97

AP History was offered as a junior, but I am not taking it until my Senior Year. AP Chem and Bio as well, but again, I didn’t even take the prerec classes for those AP’s. My rigor really is terrible.

UM used to not count Fresh grades at all. I have similar grades to you in the sense of the trend and I have been told by some posters that I should be alright as long as I continue the trend next year and raise my ACT score (I’m OOS). With that info, I’d imagine that you are doing pretty good, and have a pretty good shot to get in

I was looking back on all my old threads and thought it smart to update future CC searchers who stumble on this thread to help better estimate their own chances.

I got in umich ED and am attending.

(sorry for bumping such an old thread!)
