admission decision

when will swarthmore release admission decisions? will they mail the decisions or can applicants check online? what about internationals?

If the schedule is similar to prior years, Swarthmore usually mails hard-copy letters a couple of days before April 1st, so the most applicants receive their letters by the 1st. We'll first know when someone in Phila gets the letter and posts here.

Internationals are notified by e-mail, if I recall. US applicants have to wait for the letter.

Again, that's the way it's been in the past.

wow! the anticipation is killing me! does anyone know the size of the mail? would it be a big package--or just a tiny envelope?

It seems to change from year to year—my year it was a large (though thin) envelope. Last year it was a smaller one, I believe.

Basically, just don't get discouraged by the size of the envelope in general. I know that most EDs (myself included) freaked out when they got their letters, since they were regular size and only had one piece of paper in them with an acceptance letter (and probably the same for rejections and deferrals). I think that RD letters are larger, but that might not be the case - just don't worry about it. Don't try to anticipate the answer by the size of the envelope. :]

I'm pretty sure all decisions come in a thin envelope, the size of half a sheet of paper. So don't freak out about the size, it won't tell you anything. After you get accepted, they'll send a big package with something like "This is the BIG one" that has all of the enrollment information in it.

To verify Forgetmenots's comment about the ED letters: the rejections and acceptances were all in the same type of normal, small envelope. I was a rejectee and the guy I know who got accepted to Swarthmore recieved a letter than was identical to mine from the exterior. Good luck to everyone waiting to hear back!

thanks for the info. with some schools, it's very obvious that you've been accepted, like they post CONGRATULATIONS on the front of the envelope! the wait is almost over! and im soo nervous about it!!

On the ED acceptance letters at least, while there was no indication on the outside once you got it open the very first word was "congratulations!", so you won't be in suspense for too long. I sort of like it this way- it means that you will definitely be the first to know, not whoever gets the mail, and it would take something away from openning the letter if you already knew what it would say. Of course, I might not like it so much if I'd gotten a different letter.

My sister is a current SWAT student, and this morning she met a parent of a Spec who was attending one of her classes. The father announced in her class that decisions were being mailed either today or tomorrow (he was specific as to the date but she wasn't paying that much attention -- she thought it was today). So it appears we should have our decisions by the end of this week.

I applied to class of 2011 and I have good stats, scores and what not.
Swarthmore replied to me in early March, saying that "they wanted to get the good news to me early". do you think this is fair to other RD applicants? I applied RD

No, I don't, but I know I'm only saying that because I'm jealous that I didn't get one. (Congrats! :))

While on campus earlier, I believe that I saw some signs that the decision mailings were being sent out today. I'm not making any claims nor am I stating that I know this for a fact...just that it looked like it.

Good luck to all of those who applied! =)

My host from discovery weekend is a tour guide, and she got an e-mail today from the Admissions Office saying that letters were mailed TODAY!

so this is really it. we will know our fates by the end of the week! gooood luck!!

I got my decision in the mail today (waitlisted :/), and I'm in Virginia. The letter was postmarked March 27.

I'm sorry you got waitlisted. I just got waitlisted yesterday at JHU, so I worry about Swat. Meh...:/

My son just got the acceptance package in NJ via US Mail.

waitlisted :(

accepted. the envelope says "This is the Fat One" on the back."
