Admission Decisions Class of 2023

@kristen2256 There may be some scholarship info still coming. My daughter was accepted in December under EA and just received an email last week advising her she was awarded an academic scholarship. It’s fairly small but is renewable annually so adds up and, as I told her, something is better than nothing. This will be on top of her in-state LIFE scholarship and any financial aid she receives so I would say talk to your daughter about attending Admitted Students Day (bc that was an amazing learning day for us) and make sure she understands the situation in advance and she can make the decision if she wants to go or not. Best of luck to you!!!

My daughter was accepted Nov 19. Her letter stated she would receive “at least” this amount per year but final info would come in March. 10 days ago on Friday night, she got an email and her scholarship increased by 50%. She had applied to the Honors Program but was not selected. She has not got a final financial package in the mail yet. Sharing in case this helps anyone else and curious about other students and scenarios. She plans to attend Admitted Students Day in April. USC only has a neuroscience minor so that is her sticking point.

Are you in state or oos? What are her stats? Thanks.

My son was accepted to the Capstone Scholars Program, with a very generous Merit Scholarship. The information was emailed to him last week following his acceptance a few weeks ago.
He is OOS and has an UW 3.8 GPA and ACT 30.

@tc1207, congratulations. That’s the same thing my daughter received when she applied. She got the $5k state life scholarship and the$2k university scholarship. If your daughter’s SAT is close to 1400, you should pay that $48 and her retake the SAT (either May or June dates). My daughter had that $7K, and when she applied her SAT was at 1270. Her AP Calculus class was very easy for her at the time, so I paid $48 and she took the SAT again in May 2018. She scored a 1450 in that sitting, and her HS counselor helped her apply for the state’s late Palmetto Fellows scholarship. In the end, she went from $7k to $14k in total scholarship. She received the $6700 Palmetto Fellows, USC added the STEM portion for $3300, and her University scholarship was upgraded to the Dean’s scholarship for $3000, plus her 1450 scholarship qualified for an additional President’s scholarship of $1000, all are recurring, so that $48 investment helped greatly. Just a thought if your child is close enough on the SAT (1400), or ACT (32) minimums.

@DDclass2018 Wow that’s great! I did not realize you could sit & retake this late and increase your scholarships! I will talk to her about doing that! That’s a huge difference for a $48 investment! Thanks for the info!

@tc1207, Yes you can. Here’s the scholarship website: http://www.che.sc.gov/che_docs/studentservices/palmettofellows/files/pfs_q_a.pdf. The requirement for the late award is on page 2, and the June SAT dates are the last exams you can take and still qualify. I had my daughter use Khan academy linked to her SAT data, and they were able to give her practice questions along with 6 free SAT practice exams for you child to practice. It was all free too.

heading down for admitted students weekend tomorrow night…any places we should be sure to check out? restaurant recommendations please!! thanks!!

@PopUpZone1921 I liked walking the State House grounds and finding the stars that mark where cannonballs hit the building during the Civil War. For casual dining, we have enjoyed Liberty Taproom (in the Vista) and California Dreaming (just south of campus near the Engineering Building in a restored train station). My kid likes the Columbia Craft Brewing Company on Greene St. (couple blocks behind the Colonial Life arena) but they only have food truck food–along with beer, of course–and I don’t know if under 21s are permitted. The campus is lovely, but you will probably see it extensively during a tour so no need to walk around tomorrow night unless you have lots of time to kill.

@PopUpZone1921 - we are heading down for admitted student weekend as well. USC is hosting the first and second rounds of the NCAA bball tournament so it is probably going to be crazy busy around town Friday night. Local news says the traffic is going to be difficult at best around Columbia - Just an FYI.

Boys have tickets to friday games…Moms looking to get pedicures and explore shops and eats!! We are very excited to check out USC!! staying near the vista so I am guessing our days will be plenty filled!!! thanks for the tips!!!

Waiting on the financial packet…did not apply to HC, applied for a BM degree in composition. Was accepted to school of music but only for the Bachelor of Arts in music, not the BM degree, with the option to reapply for BM next year. Received the $3000 deans scholarship and has the Palmetto Fellows but waiting on a music scholarship. They said 1st week of April which is ridiculously late considering housing opens up April 1.

Also accepted to Furman with $37k in scholarships and accepted into their Bachelor of music for composition.

Tough decision.

@Themomof4, It’ll be a couple of days after April 1st too. My daughter’s fin aid packet didn’t show up until 4/4 last year, and this year she has told me that her fin aid packet isn’t even updated on her portal yet. They are slow at it.

Just wanted to update - I was accepted back in November and found out this month that I have also been accepted into Capstone and have received great scholarships including the Dean’s scholarship and Palmetto Fellows. Didn’t get full faid package yet

I am 1220SAT (700RW/520M) 4.5 W gpa, Top 4% of class, tons of extracurriculars/internships/volunteer work/clubs/etc, in-state. Very excited for capstone!

Well we paid the $200! Did not receive anymore scholarship for music but still cheaper than Furman even after the $37,000 from Furman. He did end up with $10,700 from USC and we are still applying for outside scholarships.

Whens Finaid coming out? Any other ideas on how to pay for this?? Need all the help we can get lol!
