Admission Essays

yeah...mine was more serious

what you do best, write about that or it won't fit

Essay advice from UVa:

Wow, that actually does help!

Yes. Another excellent resource IMO is "On Writing the College Application Essay" by Harry Bauld, here:

It is inexpensive, especially as a used book.

well i wont post it here but mine was the passions quote one
and i wrote about playing flute and why i love it and such...etc
i got into USC and i just interviewd for a trustee scholarship
i guess it helps to write about ur instrument if u are a musician

That link was indeed helpful Adad!

My essay was about something/someone that changed the direction of your life.

I wrote on my brother who passed away.

I wrote about this time my brother and I tried to measure the outlet of a wall with a 9V battery meter hooked up to my fischer price cassette player. It was easily one of the more hilarious essays I've written. In the end it talks about, how when things exploded, I knew that electronics (EE) was something I'd love to pursue in my studies.

Nevertheless, no scholarships, but I'm guessing it's because my SATs were only like a 2190/2120 depending on how you combine things. Sigh, just can't justify going to an equally good school for lower than half the price.

Well,I think writting about your own experience is the best way to show "personal".

Mine was the passions one and aboug my life as a blog...but no one should post theiers here because someone else may copy it in the future. (;

I can tell you what NOT to write about - tae kwon do! In my Presidential interview, the admissions officer for my area said "If I have to read another essay about tae kwon do..." and then put her head down on the desk in exasperation. I guess it's a popular topic.

Just write about yourself in a way that makes you unique. Don't take the stereotypical essay ideas, because then yours will be like everyone else's.

i wrote about having pulmonary alveolar proteinosis...

and i'll give you a dollar if you somehow know what that is, haha!
so yeah, mine was unique : )

It is not the topic, it is what you do with the topic.

Any topic can make for an interesting, persuasive, enlightening, memorable essay. Any topic--though it might be harder with some topics than with others.

Also, any topic can make for an unsuccessful essay.

My son wrote about a cheeseburger.

Flying- Mine was about my passion for aviation. I think it turned out well since I've got a scholarship interview at USC and into Rice.

I wrote about my search for spirituality, and how this quest has made me a better person.

It was a risk, but it worked. I got in!

I wrote mine about fomenting a communist revolution at school.

I'd like to read that! lol

Wow your essays sound really cool!!
