Admission, final steps

Hi guys, I have question, about what I should need to put in application, 1st of August? I am an international student from Kazakhstan. My SAT scores: SAT general 2200, 800 Math level 2, 780 US History. GPA: 3.8, 2 good teachers recommendations and 4 from my ex-bosses.
My best advantages is my work-experience, 4 years.
1) 2 years in National Oil Company, part-time, full-time job. Programming and accounting.
2) 1 year in Ministry of Finance, boss Vice Minister of Finance.
3) 1 year in Switzerland, financial programming, UBS.

Now I am in Boston, so what do you think about another extra-activity? I have 5 months for that.

Any new activity you start now will be seen as “window-dressing” – something you did just to make your application look better. At this stage in the process, the absolute BEST thing you can do is to write, re-write and edit your essays.

BTW: The 4 extra recommendations from your bosses might be overkill and water-down the required teacher recommendations. You should really re-think that approach, as Harvard is most interested in your potential as a scholar in the classroom. (Unless, of course, you are applying to Harvard for a job, rather than as a freshman applicant to college.)

gibby

Hm, my high school just ordinary. I mean, level of education is kind of ordinary too, I decide to work because its more interesting and valuable than doing super boring staff inside classes.
Yep, I still thinking about essays, especially in new common application, 650 words its better than 500 in last years.
Actually, I saw a lot of teenagers, who working as a service now ( in MA) like insane. Does admission service decide that they ’ window-dressing’’ too?

Those other teenagers may not be starting something new, they may be continuing to work at a service that they have been doing since they were freshman.

Remember: All university’s – especially Harvard – are in the business of education. They are looking for students who excel in the classroom, who constantly have their hands raised ready to contribute thoughtful and insightful comments. They are looking for students who inspire their classmates to be better thinkers and human beings. If you have been doing work because “its more interesting and valuable than doing super boring staff inside classes” then maybe college IS NOT for you.

Hm, very useful information. Thanks! Maybe Wharton might be better for me

FWIW: Harvard does not grant an undergraduate degree in business . . . so yes, Wharton might be a better fit for you!

Actually, OP, you may FIT best at a place like Babson…you might want to look into Babson besides Wharton…

…it is located in Boston area…

gravitas2,gibby

Thanks! In my case, I will complete 13 applications for 13 universities in USA. This year is too many smart people want to apply. So my advantages is my work-experience and decision to pay full-tuition.

Off topic side note to Gibby… the plural of university is universities; the plural of prodigy is prodigies. An apostrophe is used to indicate the possessive. Example “The university’s policy is to check for good grammar in applications. Universities pride themselves on accepting qualified students.”

Someone call the The Allies! Grammar Nazi in da house

@fauve: Thank you for the corrections. My kid goes to Harvard; I went to B.U.!

lol. Gibby. I culod raed taht!

Good evening, only now I mentioned that I can’t clearly understand what should i need to put into application. I am interested in mid-school report and final report, because I am finished school 2 years ago . Here some information, in Kazakhstan we have 11 grades schools, so in that case mid-school mean my grades from 10 grade? And final mean 11 grade. And another question, I have originals with translation on english on another page with certification by notary. Should I scan and download only english page?

Thanks a lot!

:D, finally, I finished all things for application. Here is my last question: Is it advantage for me, that only 1 student form Kazakhstan now studying in Harvard college? I mean it’s easier to apply using my race advantages? Just curious ;)

Every year, Harvard admits at least one student from each of the fifty states in the USA. The same cannot be said for countries.

Harvard admits about 10% to 11% international students. Based upon an enrollment of 1660 students, that means that Harvard will take about 160 to 180 international students next year – and thousands of students from across the world apply for the chance to have one of those 160 to 180 beds. As Harvard takes multiple students from Japan, Korea, China, Spain, Germany France, Australia, Canada and Mexico, I suspect not every country is represented at Harvard. Some years a student from Kazakhstan is accepted; other years not. I imagine it’s all done on a case-by-case, student-by-student basis. So to answer your question in a long-winded manner (sorry about that) – is it easier using your race? Probably not.

Thanks :). I like it in Harvard admission, you never know about your chances, but I still want to try :).

Hi again, while I am waiting for Harvard writing supplement, I want to ask question about common application supplement. So, I need write only one essay? I mean, i want to send my documents to 13 universities in USA, in that case I need complete 13 writing supplement for each university + 1 common application essay? Thanks a lot!

Some colleges have supplements with essays that are required or optional; some colleges have supplements that do not require additional essays. So, it all depends on the schools you are applying to and their individual requirements. You’ll have to wait until all the supplements are added to The Common Application to find out what is required.

Thanks a lot gibby! And final question ( ehhu!), common app interested in my school counselor e-mail, but she hasn’t got it :D. Can I put random e-mail?

Don’t put a random e-mail down. The Common Application is asking for your school counselor’s e-mail because they want your school counselor to submit forms electronically. You should check with your school counselor because starting this year students and counselors cannot mail in certain forms, as The Common Application is not making them available. Common Application forms such as the school counselor’s SSR must be filed electronically, so your school counselor will need to create an e-mail account just to submit forms for the Common Application.
