Has anyone had an experience with being recruited athletically? How does this affect the whole process? If a coach wants you, do you get one of the appointments that is given out at the discretion of the admissions committee? My son is no slouch, (SAT math 660, reading 630, captain of his team, eagle scout), but some of the bios I've read here would totally put him to shame. His application is complete and sent in, and the interview w/ MOC is this weekend. Additionally, he is being recruited by USNA (although not nearly as heavily), but he is meeting w/ a BGO tomorrow. Thanks for any assistance!!

My son started out as a recruited swimmer for usna but they pulled the offer early in the process. he had a nom for usna and usma, he is currently @ a prep program for usma and will be swimming there next year. I think that the coaches have some pull with admissions but cannot make the final call for an offer of appointment.

Being recruited can be tricky - how much pull the coach has depends on the sport and whether or not your son is a "blue chip" athlete or a "soft" recruit.

Nominations - they sure like recruits to get MOC nominations - it makes their opportunities to appoint them better.
USMA has it's own admissions representative for recruited athletes - I am not sure if that person is for only blue chip athletes.

I don't think his MALO will be able to talk to him if he is being recruited - per NCAA.
Please have him keep in touch with the coach and admissions.
If USMA is his first choice regardless of being recruited then he should make that known. If the coach drops him then he should stay in touch with admissions.
Good Luck!

(Don't be intimidated by SAT scores that others put on this forum - they are only a part of the package- not the whole package.)

Not sure if he's "Blue Chip" or not...this is all new to me! He is not being recruited by the Div. 1 schools here (they can recruit the athletes that USMA wouldn't touch!). The season is about to begin and he is expecting good numbers. He is fortunate to be in a sport that isn't done by many (springboard diving). My thoughts are that USMA and USNA are happy to see an A student w/ a decent SAT who can perform fairly well at the state level. Time will tell...they are flying him up for an official visit, so I think they like him a lot on paper! The coach is fabulous: he calls weekly to touch base. Navy doesn't do that, but it could be a difference in personality or coaching style. Of our two senators, he h as one interview, and the MOC sees everyone in his district. We spoke w/ them before arranging the visit, as it's the same weekend and he's flying home early to make the interview! They scheduled it around his flight--very graciously. This is one big adventure, and I'm happy for him to be having it. Ultimately, he will have to make the decisions, so I am trying to just be supportive!
