Would something like an Intel semifinalist status be considered an “admission hook?”
I know it can’t hurt admissions, but has it been known to really help kids?

Yes, intel semifinalist status is a very prestegious award to receive. If the rest of the application is in check something like that could easily get you into most any college.

Of course. Just participating in Intel is a big deal.

You should probably put in under "academic honors" in your application.

wow.. you actually placed?.. thats cool..

If you participated.. could you give me a basic idea of pretty much what you had to do to "enter the contests"?.. I mean.. did you have to submit an app junior year or senior year?.. Thanks

what's an intel semifinalist?

An Intel Semifinalist is a person who has earned semi-finalist status at the INtel Science Talent Search Math, Science and Technology competition. Usually about 300 from aproximately 1300 that apply recieve this standing. A similar competition is the Siemens Westinghouse a semi-finalist status is also as prestigious as Intel. Except Intel asks for SAT scores along with a researach project, while Siemens evaluates the project itself more than anything.
If you get semi finalist for Intel though, you also get a free lap top and $1,000 for you and another $1000 for your school!

You don't get a free laptop when you're a semifinalist - that's only for the 40 finalists. Haha.

to answer your question, theonekid, I submitted my app senior year. My project was social science though so we finished in the fall, and I filled out the app, and we sent it by the deadline in November.
