Rice admissions is full of lamers. I was rejected ... because of my grades. My unweighted GPA is 3.6 and weighted GPA is 4.3. It is not that bad. Because my GPA was "so low," they said they did not even look at my application. How could they base their admissions mainly on GPA?!!?!?! Different schools grade differently. And I am not a slacker. I have taken more than 10 AP classes and mostly other Honors classes.

welcome to the crazy world of admissions.

if what you say is true, then you are not a slacker. take that and run to a college that wants you to attend and there should be many.

if they truly didn't read your app, then it's their loss but do yourself a favor and read the Middlebury thread in the parents section. So many of the elite schools are flush with apps and the ability to choose one applicant over the other is boiling down to the stupidity of having one "C" in a class. The adcom reasoning is full of hubris.

It's going to be tough couple of years for those applying.

Good luck

I highly doubt that.

I had a 3.5 UW (89.5) and a 4.5 W (101.5) and I was accepted.

Did you actually talk to an admissions person and they told you that?

it may also depend on your rank in the class. if you have a 3.6 UW you need to be in the top 1% of your class most likely.

They told you they didn't even look at your application because a 3.6 was too low? Somehow I don't buy that.

I have 2 Cs on my transcript. They were both in French IV - AP. That is why my GPA is so low. They directly told me that because of the 2 Cs, they did not even look at my application. I know some people who mocked the application (esp. the box) and still got in. I toiled hours over that GD stupid thing. I could have spent my time so much better than working on their stupid application.

BTW, thanks so much musictoad for that nice comment

Also, GPA is a stupid way to judge students against each other. Different schools grade differently. Some schools people could do nothing and get all As. I happen to go to a hard school which I work my butt off, and still get a 3.6 (90 %). Admission should be based on ECs essays and test scores rather than grades. Test score are standardized, which puts everyone on an even plane. Grades are by no standard standardized.

i barley had a 3.7 and they obviously looked at my application because i got in.

^^^
was your sat amazing?>

My stats

13/448
89 UW, 101.5 W
1970 SAT (when admitted), 2170 now.
2140 SAT II's (780, 750, 610)

OK ... I WOULD LIKE TO CORRECT MYSELF. IT WAS NOT MY GPA THEY DID NOT LIKE; THEY DID NOT LIKE THE FACT I HAD 2 Cs ON MY TRANSCRIPT.

hopefully, you've read the middlebury nonsense and the descriptions of some of the people they've selected.

Two "c's" shouldn't disqualify you from being evaluated but life sometimes isn't fair--i remember an amherst adcom meeting on TV that trashed some kid with a "c". some schools don't even look if the SAT/ACT is below a certain level. That seems to be prevalent among schools that have garnered 20,000 plus applicants. How can you individually evaluate that many kids?

I trust you had other apps ready to go and sent them out. You should be hearing in a few days. Many kids have settled for their second or third choices and have wound up loving the college and the fun they have. Probably, no one should fall in love with a school with the amount of craziness currently going on.
What are your other choices? Do you have a safety?

MIT, Stanford, and UVA ... Rice was def #3.

My safety schools were LSU, Tulane and Perdue. I got into all three. LSU is going to be free + $$$$ if I go.

it's not the sat scores or gpa b/c both of mine were not at all phenomenal and i still got in

Roberto.

Once again I do not see how that is possible because

Sophomore - C+ in AP Comp Sci (stupid teacher didn't know the language and improperly graded)
Junior - C+ in IB English (Would have had an A, but my English teacher spited me and gave me a 60 on the final for no reason)

it probably didnt help that you had 2 c's, but i doubt it was the sole reason they didnt like you

You know what Seph ... YOU WIN

I do not know why else you would argue with me. Congrats for making me feel even worse about being rejected. YOU WIN. I was just frusterated at being rejected so I put into words what they told me. Maybe they lied to me. I dont know. Maybe everything I have done over the past 3.5 years in high school was not good enough.

You know what Seph, on a lighter note, you are a much better applicant, student, and person than I. You WIN. What else do you want from me? Do you want to make me feel worse? I am sorry I offended you.

I am sorry I offended anybody in this posting. I was just upset at the admission people. THEY TOLD ME THEY DID NOT EVEN LOOK AT MY APPLICATION BECAUSE OF THE 2 Cs. Nobody can dispute that because I know they told me that.

ONCE AGAIN ... YOU WIN Seph!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hear you talk about acceptance and rejection. When did Rice start sending the admission results? We did not hear anything from them. Does that mean an automatic rejection?

Robert - I am truly sorry. I am now imagining that each time they reject someone that they put a bogus reason in their file in case the person should ask. That really stinks. By the way, big congrats on Coca-Cola! Their loss!
