Admission Officer Contacting YOU

So I've read quite often that admission officers (regional or not) have contacted an applicant and told them that they enjoyed reading their essay(s).

I would like to know:
1. How does this happen? (letter, email, phone call, etc.)
2. How often does this happen?
3. Do they do this only if you're accepted?

Just curious :) Thanks!

This is quite often? Huh. Not doubting you, mate, just I would think that they wouldn’t really have the time to write personal letters or such. Maybe in the first few hundred essays, they would be kind enough? But for this to happen, the applicant would have to be Stephen King or J.K. Rowling or some person like that. I personally have never heard of people getting letters for stellar essays, although if this happened to me, I would probably not care whether I got accepted or not…

I’ve never heard of this happening…Maybe it does every once in a while, but the admissions officers do not have time to be congratulating applicants like that.

I’m surprised you guys haven’t heard of it! Maybe I just spend too much time on CC…

Anyway, here are some examples:

I’ve also seen people post the same thing on the Ivy boards as well.

How often does it happen? Once colleges choose (accept) individuals, then it’s their turn to plead for and court the acceptees. Personalized notes, email, calls, gifts, etc. are examples.

Your avg state school isn’t going to send anything personalized. Your LAC might send a note, knowing that the applicant will be highly courted elsewhere.

basically you’re speaking about a handful of colleges only…
