Admission question

My high school does not require students to take a physics class for graduation, but it does offer Regents Physics (basically a regular physics class with a state-administered exam at the end), AP Physics 1 and AP Physics C. Will it look bad on my college application if I don’t take physics at all in HS? Thanks in advance for your responses!

Depends on your intended major. I know a few kids who have not taken physics

It depends on what level of college you are aiming for. Most top colleges like to see bio, chem, and physics on the transcript.

I’d also take the time to look at the required/recommended coursework at colleges you plan to apply to and be sure you meet those standards.

Both answers are accurate. A science or engineering major would require physics. Many top level colleges also require physics.

I would think about this independent of college admissions. It’s good to have a basic (as in high school level ) understanding of/exposure to each of the basic sciences. If not now, when? If you don’t think this is really your “thing”, take the basic level.

Agree with #4.

In addition, from a college admissions and college prep viewpoint, students in any of the following categories should take physics:

  • Intending to major in any engineering or science.
  • Applying to a college that specifically requires or recommends physics in high school for frosh applicants, or gives additional admissions points for having physics (or a penalty for not having physics).
  • Applying to a highly selective college that uses some type of subjective admissions reading.
