Admission scores

Hey everyone,

I have an 800 on the SAT I math, SAT II math, and 36 on the ACT math, as well as 5's on both AP Calc tests. I also took Calculus III, Differential Equations, and Linear Algebra before my senior year of high school.

The problem is that my CR/English scores are not as high (670 CR on the SAT, 660 Writing, 29 combined english/writing on the ACT).

If I have plenty of EC's and work experience/community service, do you think my math scores would make up for my less than average scores at caltech? Should I try to retake the SAT and get my scores up in January even though they will most likely not count for admission purposes there?

Thanks

it can. i wouldn’t recommend retaking, as long as your EC’s and application reflect/convey passion for science. without this, even a very high test score may not help.

How about other schools, though? I’m sure there are other top-notch schools on your list that do accept the January SATs, so it’s probably worth it in that regard.

A 2130 is very low for Caltech–not impossibly low, of course, but a high overall score plus passion is even better than passion for science alone. I’d retake. The SAT is a coachable test and you’re obviously a smart kid; if you spend your Christmas break doing a bunch of practice tests, I bet your score would jump significantly. Good luck!
