Admission staffs convene today!

i love how harvard assigned each person in my school to totally different interviewers! it's not like i live in a big city or anything either. :D
anyway, if they start convening today....and my interview is next week...then that means it won't matter if they read my app before i even go to my interview.

Ahh... anxiousness increases...

When I visited Harvard, they told us this is how it works:
Someone from the admissions committee is assigned to read applications from a certain region or a few states. When the admissions committee convenes, the readers from all regions get together. The person who read your application is responsible for advocating for your admission in committee.

is there an official statement that saids they are convening right now?

they're actually supposed to convene on Monday the 4th. the e-mail sent to applicants with missing information tells them to get their stuff into harvard by the time for selection committees, which is slated for the 4th.

Hmm... this is a bit concerning. I'm guessing my test scores and mid year grades are important for my case, but they are not there yet (I just took the Jan test and I am taking the ACTs in Feb). How does this work if they are presumably already eliminating people?!

Does someone know what kind of application 'makes it past the gates'? Whats the threshold, where do people start get eliminated?

I ask because it seems almost everyone has a 3.9-4.0 or close and great SAT scores and ECs. Exactly what qualifies as an app that is immediately eliminated?

Admissions selection meetings stretch from Jan. 28 to March 22. "Applications are read by as many as four admissions officers and faculty members prior to the meetings. Deliberations about individual applicants begin in subcommittee and can last for up to an hour before a majority vote is taken. Beginning in early March, the 35-person full committee convenes to make the final determination on every applicant. Those discussions about individual applications might also continue for an hour or more before a vote. Everything possible is done to ensure a thorough review for every candidate," said Dean Fitzsimmons.

Notification letters will be mailed at 12:01 a.m., March 31, and electronic notification will take place at 5 p.m. that day. Admitted students must reply by May 1.

I'm curious, if something OUTSTANDING, or maybe like really good happens lets say on March 28th, would someone re-review the applicant? For example, if the applicant gets straight 99's in his classes and his report card came out on the 28th or something.

anyone know the answer to my question?

Celita- I don't think they would re-review an application for a better report card--the idea is to get the great grades BEFORE you apply, in 11th and first semester of 12th grade.

akhamed-the reader of your app will be looking for something outstanding and unique--if you don't have the highest GPA, it would be to your advantage to have some other fabulous talent or achievement to fulfill a need in the class of 2012. Without a lot of research, it's difficult to know what slots might be open (such as pole-vaulter, bassoonist, nanotechnologist, etc.?)

Celita - I am POSITIVE straight 99s would not make that much of a difference in an applicant's application. Winning a nobel prize might be cause for re-reviewing that late in the game. Maybe even like perfect score on USAMO. But it would have to be REALLY outstanding - waay beyond all 99s on a report card, I think.

Thank you fauve
I have been waiting for a reply for what seems to me ... years
I know no one here, not even Harvard knows what to expect or what kind of app or talent is favorable yet, but do you mind reviewing my app for any potential?

You seem to have knowledge on this and I would be very grateful if you gave your input. This offer is open to others as well ;)

If its bothersome or any trouble, I understand

NO interview for me.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm..................................................................

Will sending in updates on Feb 30 and March 16 make a difference in the application if the updates are state and national level awards and scholarship recognitions?
