In reading the old threads I have seen this question asked so many times; “Can Penn State rescind an acceptance if GPA drops in senior year?”
Someone asked this question of admissions on twitter today so I thought this is a good time to share their answer. They replied
“We would not. As long as we receive a final transcript with grad date and minimum requirements are all still met, all should be good.”
So there it is straight from admissions. As long as you graduate and the minimum requirements to get into your program have been met, you are good. Obviously, that’s not an excuse to slack, but I see panicked straight A students post each year who are getting a C in a senior class and are worried about their acceptance.
My daughter went to college in the UK. All of their acceptances are conditional and based on attaining specific grades in specific courses. And these required grades are released for every candidate nationwide about 5 to 6 weeks prior to the first semester college semester beginning! For their US candidates acceptance was based on attaining specific AP grades, which come out July 1, 8 weeks after we let our US college acceptances go by the wayside. Talk about pressure. The US college acceptance process start to finish is a stroll in the park in comparison.
Penn State is an outlier then.
So they are saying that if a student gets all D’s final semester they will still admit him? That doesn’t bode well for their retention and graduation rates.
They are saying, if they graduate and still fulfill the entrance requirements for their major, then they are ok. So if you need a certain grade in a certain class to get into the major you want, then that would still be applicable. However, they have never considered 12 grade grades in their decisions and all they have ever needed is proof of graduation. Their retention and graduation rates are still good. Freshman retention rate is 92% and they have one of the highest graduation rates in the state.
