<p>I’m OOS from PA, but I was just notified that I am a National Merit Scholarship finalist. Do you think I have a chance at admission to Barrett? If there are any Alumn out there, what did you think of your experience there?</p>

<p>If you are a NMF, you are guaranteed a very good scholarship and admission to Barrett.</p>

<p>You’ll definitely get into Barrett… if you’re National Merit, it’s kind of a “gold star” on top of your application (according to the Dean). I don’t see a problem for you! Definitely apply.</p>

<p>It’s not just a gold star, it’s a guarantee. It doesn’t really matter how good the app is; they’ll let you in. Additionally, at least this was the case when I was admitted last year, Barrett will pay for your airfare to visit and stay overnight, which is nice. You don’t have to be in Barrett to do the visit, just be a NMF to do this visit. I actually applied to the Barrett while on my visit.
Do you mean experience at Barrett or ASU in general or both?</p>

<p>The will subsidize your airfair up to a certain amount, but you have to demonstrate need honestly.</p>

<p>Not true, or at least it wasn’t last year. They’ll do it without you demonstrating need. They didn’t even ask me, just offered. I didn’t even file the FAFSA and certainly don’t qualify for anything. It’s actually reimburse, not pay, up to a certain amount (300 maybe?). It was Michelle Hollins, who’s in charge of recruitment.
So far I really like it. My experience is probably not quite the same as most, as I’m in a living community so I’ve met a lot of people that way. But the dorms are quite nice, food is good, could use a bit more variety. People here are all very nice. The academics seem no different from any other big state university despite ASU’s less than stellar reputation. Barrett is enclosed, and I feel it really does help to give that smaller college feel.</p>

<p>You don’t have to fill out any forms for it, it’s matter of them reserving it for those who aren’t going to come otherwise because of the financial burden of the trip. The BHC doesn’t have the finances to bring everyone they are interested in on subsidy. I worked with Michelle since she became the admissions rep, and while I suppose the policies might have changed, given the current economic situation I doubt that.</p>

<p>Huh, well they never asked me whether I’d come or not based on finances. I probably would’ve gone anyway, it was just nice that I didn’t have to pay $300 to do so. They just said they’d reimburse, I didn’t even ask. I believe it was mentioned when I called to set up the visit, even, so they knew I was coming. But the status on less the current economic situation and more ASU’s current economic situation may be true. After all, they’ve cut the scholarship by $6,000 since last year. So to merlana I’d say if you need it, ask, or if they offer take it, but at this point I don’t know, I only know what they did for me.</p>

<p>wait how much did they cut the scholarship by? I’m a rising senior and a National Hispanic Scholar from NJ and am interested in the Barrett program. Does anyone know how much the scholarship offer will be for the upcoming year?</p>

<p>I think the maximum is still the same, but it sounds like they may have dropped the minimum. Best option would to be call and ask directly though.</p>

<p>that makes sense especially with today’s budget cuts, its unfortunate that there aren’t as many schools that provide funding like this for Hispanic Scholars as there are for National Merit Scholars</p>

<p>The NM scholarship in the past didn’t have a max or min, everyone got the same amount. Not sure how it works now, remember reading it was $17,000.</p>
