Does anyone have experience with getting into Cox without the Scholars or Direct offer?
Once you gain admission to SMU, you can declare any major you’d like. It isn’t like UT Austin where you have to apply later to the college of business to gain admission. You just have to maintain your GPA to stay in. My son didn’t declare his major until late his sophomore year but he started taking all of his major courses his first semseter. You can do the same thing.
@2015momcollege The nice thing about SMU Cox is that everyone with a 3.30 GPA in the six course subset and a minimum 3.30 GPA overall gains entrance to the business school.
Minimum 3.30 GPA on the six-course subset:
DISC 1312 or 2305
MATH 1309 or 1337
ECO 1311
ECO 1312
ACCT 2301
ITOM 2305 or STAT 2301 or 2331 or EMIS 4340 or 5370)
Minimum 3.30 all-college cumulative GPA
Minimum 39 hours completed
I don’t know what your child’s scores/GPA, etc are, but if he/she commits to SMU, and declares their major as business, in the April, May and June they send out additional BBA Scholar and BBA direct offers.
Actually @doresearch, BBA Scholar and BBA Direct offers for Early Action and Early Decision 1 have already gone out. Students who applied Regular Decision or Early Decision II will be hearing about BBA offers in March and April.
@2015mom college- I was lucky enough to get into Cox through the BBA Scholar program, but I have many, bright friends who made it into the Business School just fine without Scholars or Direct program. Like Doresearch said, there is no cap on how many students get into Cox, which is nice. It’s all on the student’s shoulders to meet the GPA requirement. If they attend classes, do the readings/homework, and seek help (free tutoring on campus!) when they don’t understand something, a 3.3 GPA is totally doable. I wouldn’t stress about it. If your child scores too low on one of those subset classes, he/she could always retake it in summer school. If it’s just too had for your child to get the 3.3, there are majors outside the business school to consider like Economics, Markets & Culture (socioeconomics), and other options close to business to consider that could still lead to similar career options.
@Lily119 my comment was directed toward those student’s who do not get a BBA Scholar or BBA Direct offer before they commit to SMU. I know several of my son’s friends who were offered both BBA Scholar and BBA direct after they committed–these offers came in May and June when spots offered to other students who did not choose to attend SMU opened up.
Thank you.
