I heard that only people who apply to UMD through early action/decision can be admitted into the honors program, is this true? I think that I have the credentials to be admitted to the honors program, but I didn't apply to UMD early. Do I have any chance?

Only people who apply early action are considered for scholarships and honors college/ scholars program. I would call and see if you could do anything about it. I know the scholars program has a waitlist, but im not sure about the honors college.

rnottb, I’m sorry to say, that’s correct.

I’ll add that we never would have known about this policy if my daughter’s guidance counselor hadn’t tipped us off to it. Apparently, it really takes a toll on guidance departments in Maryland high schools when 40% of the class or more is pushing to make this Nov. 1 deadline.

If the OP has some really impressive stats, I certainly would call the Honors College and talk to them.

I saw Jetsnynj mentioned something about the scholars program, what is that exactly? And to plumazul, I’m not sure exactly what they woud find impressive, but I think my numbers are pretty strong. 2350 SAT (800/800/750 CR/M/W), 4.0 GPA, Officer in 4 clubs and member of 3 or 4 others, about 250 hours of community service, etc. A lot of the other schools I applied to were Ivy Level, but UMD has an exceptional aerospace engineering program and a much more reasonable tuition so that’s why I’m particularly interested in them. Is there really any chance of negotiating it, or is that quote from Sikorsky basically set in stone?

I am actually wondering if you could call and get wait listed, at a minimum, for scholars(or honors). Seems like a good possibility.

You have the stats to make it worth a shot to call, but honestly you would’ve had a shot at B/K if you applied early. I don’t know if they waitlist people though.

I really regret not applying earlier, but honestly my decision to apply was after that deadline. At first I didn’t even consider it, all I had heard was that state schools=bad and private=good. By the time I realized that schools like UC, UT, and UMD were good choices it was already beyond most of their early action dates. I actually only got in my application to UMD two days before deadline, so there really wasn’t much I could do. Lesson to everyone else, do your homework before ruling anywhere out hahaha

I definitely understand how that can happen. It’s the kind of thing that’s been pushed on us our whole lives. If it’s more expensive it must be better. If the government doesn’t have a say, it must be better. In reality UMD being a public mostly means it has to be accountable for what it does. Every grade distribution has to be posted, every salary is published. (No one has yet made DOTS answer to anyone though, they seem to be outside the law…and all sane rational thought)
