I am considering Mary Washington as one of the schools at the top of my list right now. I have a 3.5 GPA and although I have only taken the SAT and ACT once each, my scores are 1640 and 23. I am scheduled to take them both again though, so test scores could go up. I have taken 2 AP classes and 2 dual enrollment classes and for one year was involved in French club (Clubs are pretty much non existing and a bit of a joke at my school). I also job shadowed for one summer in Neurosurgery at Carilion, where I was allowed into the operating room to observe and learn. What are the chances of me getting into Mary Washington, and is it hard to get in (scale of 1-10?)?

Your SAT and ACT scores seem about average for this school, and your grades are OK, so you have a decent shot. In Virginia, Mary Washington is easier to get into than UVA, William and Mary, and Virginia Tech, but harder to get into than Radford, Old Dominion, and VCU. It’s a popular choice for good but not necessarily brilliant students who want a LAC-like experience. Kids with similar stats who want a larger community go to JMU.

As UVA and W&M have gotten more and more selective, Mary Washington has become a very attractive alternative. The campus is beautiful! A lot of my friends’ kids attend, and seem very happy there. Good luck!

I disagree with jingle. Your grades and SATs are not about average or ok for Mary Washington; they are on the low end. More specifically, you are below the bottom 25 percent of admitted applicants in terms of test scores and right at the 25 percentile in terms of GPA. And Mary Washington’s admissions are easily on par with Tech’s. On a scale of 1 to 10 I’d rate your chances of admission a 3.

Here’s the info right from the school’s website:

The data given on the Mary Washington website is preceded by the following:

The OPs GPA falls within the 50% range published by the university. The OP should compare the individual sections of the SAT against the graph given by the university.

Blueiguana, you’re right – the OP has a 3.5 and I thought it was a 3.4. Note, though, that the relevant stats aren’t those of the students who actually enrolled – it’s of those who were offered admission. This students “numbers” – SAT, ACT, and GPA – are all on the lower end by this measure, which tells me that the chance of admission is less than 50 percent.

Student GPA: 3.5
50 percent range: 3.39 to 3.94

Student SAT: 1640
50 percent range: 1650 to 1900

The OP mentions that they job shadowed at Carilion. That is in Roanoke. I do not know if Mary Washington is regional in their admissions (aka VT). If so, not being from a major city in Virginia (NoVa, Richmond, or Tidewater) may benefit the OP.

The OP should check with their GC to see what GPA/SAT/rank/course rigor successful candidates to Mary Washington have had. This will give them a good idea of their prospects.

Hunt, the admissions rates for these schools are only barely relevant – if at all. Mary Washington is self-selecting and tends to attact mostly well qualified applicants.
