Admission

How big of a roll do taking AP classes in high school play in getting into a top university? I'm sure they play a big role, but are you doomed for getting into a top university without them?

A lot of it depends on your school. Some schools offer many APs others don’t even offer AP. Top tier colleges evaluate academic rigor which entails taking challenging classes. If instead you take easy classes and get all As you will score low in the academic rigor department.

If your school offers many APs and you have none then you probably don’t have a particularly rigorous schedule. However if your school offers few to none and you’ve taken those you could, colleges will understand.

Any “top university” will want the most motivated and achieving scholars first and foremost. An indication of this is the choices the applicant makes while in HS. If you’ve avoided available AP and honors tracks, then you have little to no chance at any selective university (barring any spectacular hook)

I saw your post about USC. It seems that you’re a decent HS student, with a great future ahead of you. However, you’ve got to understand that there are limited spots at the top tier unis and kids w/a deeper track record will get a nod over you. That being said, it surely seems you’ll have a successful college career. Don’t fixate on the “name” and push forthe best you can. You’ll do fine. Best of luck to you.

Thank you. I can respect what you said. Your response was very understandable and at the same time, agreeable.
