A 21 ACT and a 3.0 GPA will get you in to UA, though that requirement will likely increase as UA is about to fulfill its enrollment goal of 28,000. The class admitted for Fall of 2010 will be the first one required to submit a writing portion of the ACT or SAT.

I think surprisingly our admissions selectively has been decreasing. It’s all part of Witt’s master plan to increase enrollment. Once our applications are way up, UA will start becoming more and more selective, thus increasing our rankings.

UAProphet,

With the possible exception of last year, it is simply not true that UA has been decreasing its admissions standards. In fact, the percentage of applicants UA accepts has decreased each year for at least the last four years. Last year, only 60 per cent of UA’s applicants were accepted, in contrast with 71 per cent of AU’s applicants.

Nevertheless, it is unclear whether UA has actually increased its standards to any significant degree. Last year, UA received a record number of applications. The number of applications jumped from 14,000 plus to 18,500. With such a huge jump in applications, UA would have needed to have rejected an even higher percentage of applicants to maintain the quality of its freshman class. The fact that the ACT average dropped from 24.5 to 24.3, and the GPA from 3.42 to 3.4 is evidence that what you suggested has some truth, at least for last fall’s class. My guess is that UA decided against rejecting an even higher percentage due to the steep state budget cuts, and the need for more tuition money to overcome the shortfall.

However, Witt remarked last fall that it would become harder to gain admission to UA with the imminent fulfillment of his goal of 28,000 students. Let’s hope he sticks by that statement. It is great that UA is growing, but now that it has reached its enrollment goal, it is time to ramp up the standards. UA has done a great job of recruiting high achieving students, yet the still modest ACT average indicates a need to restrict admissions even more. I cant believe some people think a 21 ACT is too high of a standard.

So…Yes or NO haha

Like I said, if you score the equivalent of a 21 on the ACT, and have a 3.0 or higher GPA, you should not have trouble getting in. Im hoping that will change sooner than later.

I just checked UA’s admissions web page and there is no longer any mention of a specific ACT score or GPA. So no one but UA really knows the admissions standards. Perhaps this means that they are in the process of reformulating their requirement standards to reflect greater selectivity.

I’m going with yes.

ooh good luck marshallmock! i just recently applied and am waiting for a response… anyway, i had a question about the scholarship application, so if someone could help me out, it would be great!

when do you think we’ll find out about the scholarship money we’ve received? i know the deadline is december 1st, so do we wait until then? or do they tell you sooner when you apply sooner?

this is my first time posting on this site, so any help would be much appreciated. thank you so much!

Scholarship money notification is very quick. My son applied in October, received notification of his scholarship in mid November.

oh thank you, momreads, that is definitely good to know. i just hope i get some money!! :)

you can pretty much figure out what you will get in $$ on their website.

they have specific gpa and sat/act scores and the amount of $$ tied to it.

it is possible to get above that amount, but not probable, so any $$ above the guaranteed amount is just a bonus!!!

thanks mikewozowski, i have another question. do you know if i can still send in ACT scores even though i already sent in my scholarship app and already sent them some previous scores? i’m only 2 points away from getting a lot more money… so that would be preferable. :)

yes, they will automatically up your scholarship if you make the score.

last possible date to raise score for more $$ is october act or november sat.

we are in the same position. need 1 - 3 points more for more $$ or awesome $$! i would really love the awesome $$!!

ok sweet!! thank you so much for the info! i am definitely going to sign up for the october act then. oh good luck to you then!! hope we both make the scores we need!!

Son was received admissions letter 2 weeks ago. Does scholarship notification come soon?

I would think that the scholarship letter should arrive within a few weeks, since your son applied so early. My son knew within a few weeks of his acceptance.

Thanks! UAlabama is one of his 2 backup schools if he gets injured and cannot qualify for service academy or ROTC…and he just shattered his collarbone. Always have a plan B!! Still hoping he’ll recover in time for qualifying physical fitness test, but it will be close.

Anybody who thinks that he/she might be a “borderline” applicant at UA would stand a BETTER chance for acceptance the earlier he/she applies…so, if I was worried, I’d apply in September of senior year.

For this years freshmen class (2009), UA received 17,000 applications. That is more than double the applications that it received just a few years ago. Therefore, not only is it not having to lower its qualifications for acceptance, it welcomed a freshmen class this fall that is the smartest (highest stats) group yet.

Since UA is now getting more applicants from across the country (because of its generous out of state academic scholarships), it hasn’t had to decrease its standards.

I wouldn’t be surprised if UA raises its standards for admission and raises its standards for scholarships.
