Rumor has it (at least where I'm around from) that Extra Curriculars are really good for getting you into UCLA, and being ASB President is close to an instant admission (as long as you have decent stats, and even then....) Any thoughts?

i heard about being ASB president = close to an instant admission. It's apparent in my school at least.

well of course. If you have decent stats and you have good extracuirriculars/essays, its what separates you from other applicants in the pool.

well, decent as in 1800s on sat Is, 600s on sat IIs, and 4.0 gpa decent.

ucla's avg is a 4.17 w with a 2030 and i believe if ur sat 2's add up around 1300-1400 ull be good to go.

From what ive been told, its good to excel at both things i.e. hhave a 4.17 or higher and a 2030+ but if not, its pretty important to have excelled greatly at one thing so u make up for the other and try to earn back points through extracurrics, essays, maybe course rigor etc

anon2528462 what is the relevance of your post to this topic?

Well obviously EC's as big as ASB president will help. For instance, our ASB president was 1 out of 2 people of the 22 people at our school that applied for Stanford Early Decision and got in. But to say it's a shoo-in obviously doesn't hold up either, because regardless, the school is looking for academics.

If an admissions officer comes across an ASB president with a 3.7 and 650 SAT/SATIIs and a normal applicant with 4.0 and 700+ SAT/SATIIs, the admissions officer is liable to choose the latter applicant. ECs will help if you're REAL close to the imaginary cut off, but if you're way off, not so much so...

my friend last year was asb vp and elc and did not get into ucla. but perhaps it is different this year with holistic

very close to the truth, so logn as you're also a good student.

the asb president at our school got into NYU on a full ride along with uc berkeley.

Being ASB president doesn't equal instant admission, unless you have very good stats. The ASB president at my school got rejected from UCSB, even though she had alright stats.

i'm not sure about LA but i have a 2.94 and got into UCD and UCI which i think the avg is at about 3.6-3.8 ish

SAts were 1760 so about 200 pts below avg

in the process it landed some nice scholarships from outside organizations

so I belive EC's and Essays are really important if not more so than SATs

flong,

4.17 is actually berks gpa average from last year...4.12 is LA's

and 2030 is higher than either berk's or la's average sat...berk was 2007 and la was 2003

j0ey0ey: That average is probably weighted while you are comparing it to your UW average. Still, even if you weight your GPA, it's not even close to that, and you have your EC's to thank for that.

On a side note, wow the average GPA accepted to UCI is rather high. I remember a ton of people with 3.0 GPA's and no real good EC get into Irvine. A lot of people got into UCI with no where near a 3.8W GPA. Amazing.

The actual people that DO go to UCI tend to be around that area in the GPA. UCI tends to be the last fallback school of a lot of the kids that actually go to LA/Cal/SD, so it gets to inflate it's admissions statistics.

^ yep (10char)
