hi i'm an incoming junior but i havent started on any volunteer work yet (which i know isnt really good). Does it look bad to admissions officers that I start now? I was thinking of tutoring elementary school kids. btw, im shooting to get into UCLA, UCSD or USC, with UCI and UCR as safeties.

if you're a rising junior, I don't think it would look "bad" ....plus, getting really involved in tutoring kids & sticking with it would be a plus. but don't just do it to "get" volunteer hours :]

it doesn't look bad at all. Though make sure you actually enjoy your volunteer work. I've heard of people getting into top schools without volunteer work at all.

why would it look bad, that you decided to start something that would help others?

argh, good for you for doing it, no matter the motivations
