Admissions Are these stats ok?)

Hey guys!

So I'm currently a junior in high school and I never thought UCSB would become my dream school, but it's one of the two now! Anyway, I was wondering if these stats are okay? (I'll edit this and post actual confirmed stats when I get my transcript and test scores).

GPA: 3.1 UNweighted (but my school doesn't weight until senior year when they're choosing valedictorian)
- 5 AP classes taken (Bio, Chem, Eng. US History, Calc AB) so far and 6 honors (World History, Pre-Cal, Alg. 2/Trig, English for two years, Chem) (we had eight classes each year - block schedule but I've taken every honors/AP (except BC Calc) there is for core classes)

-will take four more next year (AP Gov/ Ap Econ, AP Physics, AP Lit)
-projected weighted GPA - above 3.7
Top 10% of my graduating class (most are slackers and there's only about 70 kids who are taking ALL of the same classes as me - class size - about 400)

SAT: taken in March - projected above 1800

ACT: Will Take In April
Subject Test: Chem + Math : June
Major: Computer Science
(this might not matter but I'm an african american student from lower middle class)
In-State

Clubs: Polynesian (3 years and next year) Glee (3) Persian (1 and next year) Interact (3 and next year) Fashion Club (1)
- Treasurer for Glee (1)
- Treasurer for Poly (1)
-Secretary for Persian (1 and next year)

Sports: Volleyball (2 and next year)
- 1 year JV
- 2 (hopefully) years Varsity

Track next year

do you think I'll get in with these? Thanks for your time! :)

Honestly its becoming more and more unpredictable to say whether someone will get in or not. I have a 3.75 unweighted Uc gpa and a 4.13 weighted. My SAT was 1500 which is super low. I was rejected by UCSC and UCSD. I got into UCSB and UCLA. My advice is to continue to keep striving to do better, write your personal statements from the heart, and have faith in yourself. A lot of people who think just because they have high scores along with a certain shade of skin, fail to realize that neither color nor number will determine college or future success. Senior year is coming bro time to prove all those who said you couldn’t wrong. You’ll get in.

I agree with ^^ Qaz, because there seems to be no rhyme or reason as to how the UC’s select their admits! All I can suggest, as a mom going through the process with my son, is to get the best GPA possible because it seems like GPA is the main consideration. Choose a major that is not as impacted, or if you choose something like engineering, choose an alternate that is not as impacted. Do not take AP or honors classes if you don’t think you are going to get A-B’s in them because they can bring down your GPA. Write passionate essays and personal statements that tell the schools about YOU, not your family members.

Good luck!

@QazQaz456 thanks! That’s really nice of you and I appreciate the advice. Congrats on getting in, also, those are two of my tops! :D

@liveonboca thank you as well! and the only two majors I even ever really consider are Math and Comp. Sci. Is Math less impacted? I’m not keen on going undecided, however, and nothing else really interests me (except English, but I would rather not).

@foreveryoung27 I would say MATH is a good alternate as it is in the College of Letters & Sciences instead of engineering. It might be impacted though, but not as much as your choices above.

Good luck!

@liveonboca I can still switch however, right? If i get in?

Here are the incoming freshman stats for fall 2013 http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/campuses/files/freshman-profiles-ca/freshman-profile-ca-ucsb.pdf

About transferring, CS is hard to transfer into, so I wouldn’t go there counting on it. If you want CS you should put CS as your major with your alternate as math. You might end up not getting accepted in CS and accepted in math, and then you would have to decide.

@collegevetting Thank you! yeah i’m reading up right now and people say it’s extremely hard to transfer into. I didn’t know until now that you choose an alternate major, so I might end up do what you said, but honestly, i love both the same, it’s just i’ve had more experience in Math than in comp. sci (and my mom was a programmer for like 30 years)

Well, you have months to decide… I understand they are opening the UC application in August this year to work on, although you still can’t submit it until November.

You should look at both of the programs at UCSB, it might help you to decide.

Good luck!

PS I would really prep and raise your sat score, unless your ACT is so much better you just decide to go with ACT. Particularly for engineering and math they will want to see high math scores, but in addition higher scores will pay dividends in terms of acceptance chances, generally.

@collegevetting Thank you so much! and my scores come out in four days – im so nervous!

Best of luck!! And yes, that gpa change is a good one!

If you’re trying to get into CS - you won’t get in. GPA needs to be at least a 4.0 and SAT is already quite low since the average is 1900. I had only a 3.7 weighted but a 33 ACT.
