Hello - So I am going to be a senior this fall and I want (more than anything) to attend West Point. Unfortunately I found out about just this summer and I've been looking at the admissions to do list and I am nervous as hell. Not to mention confused.
My main concern is the Nominations. From what I gather everyone applying needs to get one but what is terrifying me is that I need to appeal to Congress?! If anyone could help clear that part up for me (explain to me what I have to do to get a nomination) I would be extremely grateful.

Note: I apologize if there is already a thread for this.

I might be mistaken, but I think you’re a little behind in the timeline. Check out the USMA website as most applicants get started with the process in the Spring of their Junior year. The requirements are laid out there.

Hey, don’t sweat it. You’re a bit behind, but you can catch up if you are dedicated. Go to usma.edu, then click the admissions link. The site will direct you, but basically fill out the prospectus, and your portal will be activated. You don’t need to appeal to congress, just contact your two senators and congressman, and request the applications for nominations. Once you complete those apps, they will contact you to set up an interview if you are competitive. You may or may not actually end up getting interviewed by the actual congressman or senators, most likely it will be a board reviewing you. Hope that helps!

You are not too late. My son did not begin the process until fall of his senior year (and he is now a firstie.) Follow USMA at WPchica’s advice. Also, go to the websites for your two senators and your congessman-- there is probably a link on the website with instructions for candidates who want to apply for nominations. if the instructions are not there, then call their offices and ask. You need to get started because there are a lot of essays but you definitely not too late. Yoou might also poke around at [United States of America Service Academy Forums - Powered by vBulletin](http://www.serviceacademyforums.com) There is a ton of information there

Hello I have applied to west point, and have always wanted to go there, I haven’t been home to see if I have received a reply yet. I am going to be a senior in high school and I was wondering what my chances are of getting in. So I will provide information about myself.

trackstar; you already got a nomination? how? your chances look really good. class rank and leadership positions weigh heavily as well. your academics look solid though.

with times like that, you should contact the coaches. It’s much easier to get into West Point as a recruited athlete, especially with your times.

Agree with joseph41373…the odds are much better if you are a recruited athlete. i also had the same question as ccusma17, how can you already have a senatorial nomination for next years class?

NOMs are issued by your Member of Congress (MOC) depending upon where you live. Most have websites that describe in great detail how to apply for a NOM and you often apply for the NOM online. You don’t need to personally contact a senator or congressmen to apply, the process doesn’t work that way. All those who apply for a NOM within a given district are evaluated on a competative basis. Those who do live interviews schedule them all at the same time usually in the 4th quarter of each year. Based on those interviews they determine who gets a NOM. You need to be 3Q AND have a NOM to be in the running for an appointment at the service academies. The USMA official site also describes the application process steps.

Make sure you know the deadlines for submitting for a NOM, since if you miss the deadline you will NOT be eligible for that class year.

For recruited athletes, the nominating process can be a little different. While it’s true that everybody needs a congressional nomination, the academy has some leeway in securing nominations for certain athletes. In my class, some athletes had nominations from parts of the country that never used their allocation of nominations. In other words, if the athletic department really wants you, they will secure a nomination for you.

For trackstar, I would definitely be contacting the track & field coaches immediately. Looking at the USMA website, the best mile time posted by a cadet in 2012 was 4:14. With a 4:05 under his belt, this time would make trackstar immediately viable as a recuit and contributing member to the track team.

Hey all! Thank you so much for all your helpful replies. Just wanted to let you all know that I have finished all my applications with time to spare and am just waiting to complete my CFA (very anxious). For anyone who might stumble upon this thread in a similar predicament, August before senior year is late but not damagingly so. I was able to do finish everything within a timely fashion and hopefully, I’ll will have the honor of being accepted to USMA!

I am a Junior in High School this year and am beginning the application process. I was just wondering how long the application essay should be. I am not able to begin the actual application on the USMA website until the eighth and just wanted a head start.

Trackstar, as runner myself (state champion XC), I must say your times are fantastic. Definitely follow the advice listed above and pursue the recruitment option, if you have not already.
