Admissions "basics"

Would anyone be willing to give me a walk-through of the basics of NYU admissions, the different schools, the competitiveness for each? Any links to admissions data sets?

I have two kids who are way too young to be thinking about college admissions, however they attend a charter school which celebrates college attendance and encourages kids to learn more about their favorites. Since my husband is a professor at NYU, it is the university they know best (the t-shirts, the office parties, the “Daddy day at work” when school is off but parents are not).

Thanks in advance.

Oh, one wants to be a math professor (or a professional soccer player - still debating ;)) and the other wants to be an engineer (“to build molecular robots that kill cancer cells” after he learned that his Pop Pop’s life was saved by robot-assisted surgery on stage 1 colon cancer).

good luck to your kids - never to early to start thinking about college - but I encourage you & them to be open minded.
– go way beyond NYU -of course.

Some info re NYU is here:

NYU engineering is relatively new in that NYU took over NYU Poly in Brooklyn:

I am sure there are lots of resources out there. Consider getting a few books:

Good luck & enjoy the journey.

Thanks @CA1543 very much!

Free tuition or 50% off? See https://www.nyu.edu/faculty/benefits/full-time/faqs/tuition-remission-new-employee-faqs.html

@4kidsdad 90% discounted since my husband is tenured faculty with a base salary is over 50k/yr.

^Wow! You should try to get your two kids into NYU.

Indeed, no small factor. One is a very strong student, for the other getting into NYU would be a impressive accomplishment (possibly unrealistic).

Tisch is talent-based.
Tandon is relatively easy to get into compared to CAS.
Stern is very difficult to get into compared to CAS.
Global/Liberal Studies is their sorta remedial entrance program (many full pay students).

Does NYU participate in Tuition Exchange?

I don’t know about tuition exchange. I haven’t heard of it before.

Your students are still in elementary school, right? You can ask, but that is a lot of years away – so many things can happen between now and then.

@intparent Agreed. On my toughest parenting days, researching college stuff is a tonic. It makes very salient the fact that there is a light at the end of this tunnel (OK… not that applying for college is a “light” but it is the end of the tunnel).

Practically speaking, my big fear is that NYU’s ticket will get hot as a front row seat at Hamilton over the next decade. And what looked like a reasonably achievable goal now may seem laughably reachy. Just something to keep an eye on. I don’t want to base my thinking on dated information.

Research TE.
It’s often a benefit for faculty children (opportunities to attend other colleges in a network, at lower costs.)

I think it is okay to understand faculty tuition breaks as they might infirm careers decisions. But you can’t count on those schools working out for your young kids for sure, and worrying about somehow molding them toward that path is likely to backfire In a myriad of ways.

Tisch is mostly based on talent. The film school has an acceptance rate for around 2% and transfer is under 1%. This is for the Kanbar film school
