My current GPA is 3.6 and my class rank is 16 of 129. I was a bit of a slacker during my freshmen and sophomore years but I redeemed myself during junior year. I finished with a 97 and ranked 2nd in my class. My school doesn't offer weighted GPA's and operates on a 4.0 scale.
I have taken the most rigorous classes that are available at my school which include three honors courses during my junior year. I am currently taking college credit bio, calc, and English. In the school community I'm pretty active serving as the president of student council, editor of the paper, president of the law club, president of national honor society, and a member of the Spanish national honor society. I also have 500 hours of community service. Along with that I was one out of two in my school who was awarded an internship with the D.A. that began in September.
I recently got my SAT score back and I got a Cr- 570 M-510 W- 520. Since Penn state takes the highest from one sitting this was my best. My personal statement was flawless and I filled out the extracurricular activities part. I also took the liberty of sending letters of recommendations because I figured it couldn't hurt. I applied on October 1st, what are my chances?

your in. Consider applying to the Schreyer Honors College as well.

cwryan1, I agree that I think he will probably get accepted for regular, but there's not reason for him to apply to schreyers. He got a 1080 on his core SAT score. Schreyer is as hard as any ivy league school admission.

Schreyer does not look at SAT scores when admitting students, rather they evaluate the applicant as a whole, taking into consideration their high school academic record as well as of course the essays and leters of rec submitted with the app. He has significant ECs and volunteer hours and still manages a good GPA and class rank. The internship is also nice.

He has a 3.6, which is a good gpa but Schreyer is over a 4.0. He is a good applicant for regular, but not Schreyer.

Thank you both for taking the time to reply, it is greatly appreciated. I must say I was very nervous about being admitted due to my mediocre SAT score but I'm glad you both feel I will be admitted. Penn State seems to be one of those schools that doesn't review the application holistically but rather is a stickler to the numbers, which is a great concern of mine. I never applied to Schreyer because I felt it would be an automatic rejection due to its Ivy League requirements. Also to be quite frank, I have taken honors courses my whole life and am looking forward to just taking regular courses throughout college.

Hope you get accepted Knight02. If so, you'll love it. There is nothing quite like that first football weekend as a student in Happy Valley. Simply amazing. Best of luck.

Thanks for both of your support, but today I was actually rejected. I'm an out of state student so maybe that played a role but still really disappointed.

What major/college did u apply to and did you consider summer ?

I applied as an undecided major because I wasn't quite sure if I wanted to major in business or political science. Yes I did apply for summer session, I was rejected for both fall and summer.

im shocked you didn't get in

most likely SAT scores held you down. We have been hearing from the collegian and profs that this years applicant pool is very strong and very large, so they are probably going to be cutting alot of talented students to get to the right size pool of accepted applicants.

cwryan do you think it helps to have 2 people in the family that went there? (sister currently)??? BTW my SAT's are 1150 out of 1600

I am sorry Knight03! Understandably, you must be very disappointed! I wish you the best of luck and happiness wherever you go to school next year.

Sorry knight03, I thought you had a shot, but I knew it would be close with the SAT below 1100. Best of luck wherever you end up.

I agree cwryan1, I just read an article stating that all state schools have received a record number of top tier applicants this year. Due to the economy and high price tags of schools such as Fordham I can't say I'm surprised. Of course it's unfortunate but it is reality. Thanks for all of the sympathy it is truly appreciated, thankfully Penn State was my second choice. Also jec7483, the average SAT score according to College Board was a 1090 and that was only the 50% mark. More importantly the decision is supposed to be based primarily on the GPA and that what disappoints me the most. The past is the past though, no need to reflect on it but rather move forward.

I am not sure what they're doing on collegeboard, but the sat range is 1100-1300 for the 25-75%. Penn State University Park- College Overview College board has the 25% at 1090. I know the average and percentile can be similar, but with 75% being more than that and many being significantly more the average is higher. The average is around a 1200, so I am not sure who told you that. Again, sorry about not getting in.

CollegeBoard.com lists the middle 50% range of combined CR and Math at 1090-1300. I, too, am sorry that you were not admitted. It does appear that the top 50 schools have received more applications earlier than normal.

knight, im sorry that you werent accepted

i just got into my safety school today so i feel a little better now because i noe that if all else fails i have somewhere to go

GOOD LUCK! :)

I don't know if this is true, but a teacher at my daughters high school said there were a million more applicants than last year for the high school class of 2009. Apparently, it is the end of baby boomers having kids. After this year, the applicants are supposed to drop. Combine that with the economy, and more are applying to state schools that would have applied to the ivies.
