Are you applying to the colleges or engineering programs?

Thanks for reading my post! :) I am planning on majoring in Chemistry when I receive my BA. Afterwards, I hope to utilize that degree in order to reach medical school.

Columbia Univ. - reach
Cornell Univ. - reach
New York Univ. - match
Penn State Univ. - safety

i think they are all reaches

I think you need to retake the SAT. Even for an URM, I think that SAT score won't cut it at many of your choices. An extra 200 points or so would make more of a difference than anything else you could possibly come up w/ to do the last month of summer.

again, too much emphasis on SAT. being an URM and having excelelnt everything else will overlook the SAT.

columbia: reach
cornell: reach

carnegie mellon: match
NYU: match

penn state: likely admit (if you're instate)

Carngie-Mellon Univ. - match
Columbia Univ. - reach
Cornell Univ. - lesser reach
New York Univ. - match/ safe
Johns Hopkins Univ. - lesser reach/ match
Penn State Univ - absolute safety

You need more schools in between Hopkins and NYU. Look into places like Emory, WashU, Michigan, Chicago.

They're all reaches because of your SAT scores which all the adcoms will see. Your chances are good at PSU. Agree with slipper1234 that you lower your sights a bit; his suggestions are good ones.

Penn State i think hes right about, NYU possibly, but CGS if u ask me. And Cornell...i think is a reach

This is my personal opinion, i wouldnt look at these schools. Granted hes an URM, but a student who scores 1700 sumthin on his SAT's will have a hard time doing the work that the rest of the students at Cornell, Columbia, and the other schools are doing. You may get in on URM but is that what you really want??

Your class rank and grades are fantastic, but that SAT is really gonna pull you down. How competitive is your high school? If it's not that good, then grades and class rank may not hold as much weight as you need them to. Try to get leadership positions in your clubs. If you want to be competitive at some of those schools, you MUST get that SAT up. 2000+ would be ideal, but at least try to get each section in the 600's. Right now I think Cornell and Columbia are huge reaches, JHU is a reach, and NYU and carnegie mellon are slight reaches. Penn state is a match out of state, safety in state.
