Admissions Committee

Does anyone know how the applications are read in the Rice admissions office? What's the process like?

Yes, I'd like to know if they classify them by majors and pick from a stack or compare them all together. I'd like to know if they accept a certain number from each major. I'd also like to know if they look at a certain criteria such as a low SAT II and then reject the whole application. Also, I wonder how long they spend on each application before accepting or deferring. I guess they pick out the highest SAT scores then maybe then put them in descending order and go from there?

well i dont think u have to declare a major, just have to apply to a certain school, and then check possible majors, so i am positive they evaluate each school seperately....

Going my SAT score is really shallow... 1600 w/ 3.0gpa WHAT A WASTE! lol
i bet they just go by alphabetical order.. or maybe even geographically... i dont know..

yeah...i definitely know for a fact that you're competing against people who are applying to the same particular school that you are. but i really don't think that the possible majors play a big part in the process

I meant the different schools, not majors. Seems like I read somewhere that only 40 engineers were accepted ED; doesn't seem like very many.

That is for last year anyway, not this year of course.

does anyone know if the Rice adcom uses the AI calculator or a similar system as that of the Ivies?

Hi~We were told to apply to the school where you want your application read. In other words, if you were sure about your major choose the school that you had the most in common with and that is where the application would be evaluated like others applying to the same school. Since it's easy to pick up classes / majors at Rice it then becomes easy to transfer. (Exception Arc. and Music) I don't think they are grouped by major since at this point it's a little vague for most applicants.

does rank play a big factor in the admissions decision?

It does. Look at some of these numbers:

<a href="http://www.ruf.rice.edu/%7Einstresr/ricestatistics/Pages/select03.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.ruf.rice.edu/~instresr/ricestatistics/Pages/select03.html</a></p>

You know, it's clear that people with higher ranks do better in the admissions process. But I'm thinking that might be because people with higher ranks generally have taken difficult classes and done well in them and are also active in their schools. Maybe the class rank thing is just kind of incidental. What do I know, I'm one of the 24% who wasn't in the top 5% of their high school class...

Jen: Maybe you weren't top 5%, but you are R/B so I'm guessing that you attended a pretty tough NY high school and were well north of 1500. Right?

Correct - which proves my point. It's not really about class rank - that just usually goes along with the whole package.
