I'm just wondering, for a school like Yale, do adcoms view you more in context with your high school or region?

I go to a semi-large public school in a less popular state so that may give a slight (but not much) geographic advantage but the competition to these top tier colleges in my school is quite tough this year. The thing is, I'm good but maybe not AS good as some others (grades but more EC-wise), though we all occupy different niches. I do, however, feel that I would have a good shot but I fear that adcoms may think, "We'll just take the 'slightly better' one", which may not appear to be me at first glance.

Will this really hurt me? My school doesn't send grads to ivies that often, maybe one every two or three years, and I'm afraid it would be difficult for them to accept more than one student from my school, if we really are competing against each other and not the region. I hear there is no set quota, but if this were true, it would seem kind of unfair since our HS class is particularly strong this year.....

Thanks for any thoughts or past experiences-it really helps! :)

Admissions officers will look at your application in the context of both your region and your high school.

In-school competition is a factor at the admissions table, but there are no set quotas. How many students a school will accept from a particular high school depends on the competition and the applicants in any given year. There is no way of knowing precisely how admissions committees make their decisions, but even if there are loose quotas from schools, they will almost certainly be overridden when multiple exceptional candidates present themselves.

As wjb said, multiple extraordinary individual will override other considerations. My local HS had four admits two years ago – a statistical anomaly for sure. Usually there are 0-2 admits any given year.

Yeah, I mean statistically for my school we can have anywhere from 2-6 admits per year, and having 6 Yale admits from just one school is A LOT, so if there are a lot of candidates that the adcoms deem talented and worthy they won’t shy away from letting them all in just because they’re all from the same school. Obviously I think there’s some amount of competition in your school/region, but if you think about it for a school like Yale you’re competing with the whole world! Don’t worry about it, if you want to apply, apply and hope for the best! Good luck :)
