Im a rising junior so Im still unfamiliar with the admissions process

but

how do teacher recommendations work?

I was planning on giving a common app recommendation to each of my teachers, then collecting it and any letters they write, and then photocopying them 5-10 times (as necessary) and then stuffing envelopes, and having them seal it and then mailing it off IN my application packet. Is this allowed? Because I am applying to like 8-10 schools (or plan on) I don't want to just give out 8 envelopes and rely on my teachers (haha distrust) just in case.

My recommendation is this...talk with your guidance counselor. Most high schools have a set way they suggest that teacher recommendations work. If there is no set policy or suggestion, then my next recommendation is to speak with each teacher you are requesting a letter of recommendation from and ask them what method works best for them. Understand they will have MANY students asking them to write them letters, so be respectful of their time and agree to what ever process they choose.

In addition, reading your message it seems as if you are asking ALL your teachers to write recommendations. DO NOT DO THAT. Choose one or two, that is all that schools will require.

Finally, some colleges require a confidentiality agreement to be signed by the recommendation provider that basically means that the student does not have access to the letters. If that is the case, then your process won't work.

Hope that helps.

"I was planning on giving a common app recommendation to each of my teachers..."

I'm sorry I meant to each of my teachers that are writing recommendations. Not to all of my teachers. Sorry for the ambiguity

Does JHU require a confidentiality agreement?

Sorry if this is a bit off topic but...I know the application requires only 2 recommendations. Does JHU specify where these have to come from? It's probably to one's best advantage to get a math/science teacher rec but is a humanties rec required?

Do they really care how long the teacher has known you (they ask in the common app and Im pretty sure they will in the JHU app)
I want to get a recommedation from a teacher who has known me only since May of junior year. At the moment I havent actually been taught by this teacher yet, but will have been for almost 4 months by the time my application gets in. Could this be an issue?

smder99 - no, we do not require an official confidentiality agreement but we do recommend that students do not have access to their letters of recommendation.

imabeliever - you are required to submit two letters of recommendation - one from your guidance counselor and one from a teacher. We do not provide recommendations regarding which teacher to select - it is your choice. Choose wisely!
