"Dean of Undergraduate Admissions Jeffrey Brenzel announced Wednesday afternoon that he will step down from his position at the end of the academic year in June.

Brenzel sent an email to Timothy Dwight College announcing his decision to step down, following University President Richard Levin and Yale College Dean Mary Miller’s email to office staff on the subject. Brenzel will continue to serve as TD College Master next year, a position he has held since 2010, and will begin teaching again in Yale College.

“I’ve loved both of my dual, and sometimes dueling, roles: admissions dean and college master," Brenzel wrote. "It’s both fascinating and compelling work to be responsible for bringing together the entire undergraduate community of Yale."

Brenzel did not specify the exact reason for his decision, but he said he is “ready to take advantage of yet another Yale opportunity and start another Yale adventure.” He added that he is looking forward to spending more time with students in Timothy Dwight."

Though I am happy for Dr. Brenzel personally, I wince a little bit at this loss at the helm of admissions. He was a real gem.

In search of a new President, as well as a new Director of Admissions, Yale finds itself at a major inflection point. I have read that David Swensen, Yale’s legendary endowment head, is fighting some personal health challenges. If he were to step down this year, it would really be a challenging trifecta of losses.

Had not heard that about Swensen – he was my Equity/Bond mkt professor when I was an undergrad. Both Brenzel and Levin have been incredible assets. I’m happy to have worked with both of them in my capacity as an alum club president. But I eagerly await their successors too.
