Admissions Decision

Hi there,
I was planning on submitting my app tomorrow and I was wondering if I would get my response within 4-6 weeks or if I would get it later in the year like in October? Any input would help. Thanks!

Applied last July 20th and was not accepted until Oct. 19th.

The waiting is tough!

Was your application complete the 20th? And were you an easy admit or was Pitt a reach school for you?

My application was complete July 20th.

I was applying to Pitt’s nursing school. It was not a reach for me, but I was concerned about the limited number of seats, so thought it was best to apply early.

Regardless, with Pitt early is always better, since they have rolling admissions.

Good luck!

No matter when you apply in the summer, Pitt won’t start sending out decisions until the last week of September/first week of October. The benefit to applying early is hearing back sooner (i.e. the fall) and having first dibs on acceptances and money.

I would agree, my son applied during a visit in June, and he did not get his acceptance until October.

My daughter applied the first week of July this year and she just got an acceptance letter today for the School of Engineering! Maybe they’re sending them out earlier this year?

Chances are she is going to get some money too. IIRC last year pre-October acceptances were rare, and generally came with a scholarship offer within a few weeks.

/\ AwesomeOpossum: Thank you for your input. I hope so on the scholarships…we’re OoS (NC). Her letter did not mention the Honors College but she appears to meet based on the criteria on Pitt’s Honors College website:

“we are looking for a combined SAT math and critical reading score of 1400 (daughter’s is 1420) or a 32 composite ACT score (daughter’s is 34) , an ‘A’ average in a challenging high school curriculum (daughter’s is UW 3.7 / W 4.5) , and a top 5% class rank (if applicable) (daughter is 13% so she misses this part- her school is very competitive but I’m hoping the other stats will make her eligible).”

So if she was to be considered for Honors College, would she have been notified in her acceptance letter or does that come later?

I got an acceptance too, but no information on money.

My scores are not quite where your daughter’s are coleman. Hoping to have them up with the next round of SATs and hoping that will help with Honor’s College and Scholarships. With her scores and being from NC, she should be a shoe in for the great UNC Chapel Hill too!

It is a nice feeling to have one acceptance in hand. But now the REAL work begins with stretch schools and their SAT subject test requirements and such, the Common App, etc.

My son picked Pitt over UNC (We are from NC also) after receiving a scholarship. He has never regretted it. The scholarship letter come a few weeks after the admission.

For both kids, acceptance came first and scholarship letter came 2-4 weeks after. Both applied in the summer, acceptance around October and scholarship around late October/November.

Southeastmom: Given UNC Chapel Hill’s prestige, nice college town, ranking and huge school spirit, what made him choose Pitt? Was it a specific program, money, the feel of the campus??? Just curious as it is kind of THE thing to go to Carolina if you get in and are from NC…considering the very low cost for NC students and the national reputation it carries (plus, the Duke/Carolina games!).

Pitt is a great school, but what about it made him choose it over UNC?

Also, did he meet many other kids from the south at Pitt?

As for Pitt Scholarships…hope to hear something positive in that regard or we won’t be able to afford it over a state school (I am an out of state student regarding Pitt).

hsgrad: My son really wanted to go to a big city school. He thought Chapel Hill was too small and insular. He wanted to take part in campus activities/events but also have a vibrant city at his doorstep. Along with other Pitt students, he goes to the Symphony and other cultural events on a regular basis. Pitt students get free admissions to major museums. The public library main branch is right in Oakland and is really great. He explores the many neighborhoods and parks by bus (free for students) or bicycle. There are many things Pittsburgh has to offer which Chapel Hill cannot match. In addition his major’s (Physics) reputation is not appreciably different between the two. When full tuition was offered, he jumped at the chance to go to Pitt. He has met a few southerners there. Not many, but that’s not a priority for him.

Pittsburgh seems to be an awesome city so I get the appeal of that. In addition, Pitt has a solid ranking and with the other factors thrown in I see your point…rather, your son’s point! Thanks-

Thanks for the input guys. I just received my acceptance letter today! One week and 2 days after my app was complete!!! I am so excited!

It is a great feeling to have an acceptance in hand at the start of senior year.
Are all/most state schools the plug in admissions I hear that Pitt is (meaning they look at your grades and scores and you are in or out)?

Congrats to those who have already been accepted for the class of 2018! Are you all, like coleman4’s daughter, headed for the School of Engineering? Or are other schools also starting to give out acceptances?

I got my acceptance to the School of Arts and Sciences.

Arts and Sciences…
But I keep getting stuff telling me to consider Biomedical Engineering.
