Admissions Decision

I’m in-state and received 10k + 2.5k stipend

@BostonSportsFan, trust me Umass is great school and you will not regret it. My S got in in 6 schools and so far financially Umass is the most affordable even we did not get any $ from Umass and other schools gave him around 12-20k and still have around 30-40k left to pay. debt is not good.Uconn is great school too, but for OOS kids is not affordable.

I feel its better to attend a school where your student will be smarter than the others. After having my two oldest kids graduate college (D UCONN, S UW) , state schools have large classes and hard inpersonal grading. Most students get lousy grades and owe money.

bigdtah4 and jih2003 - what are your stats? Most in-state scholarships I have heard of are for $5k, congrats!

my son received 15k oos. computer science - engineering major. Stats are 3.4 GPA (from very competitive HS) 31 ACT - lots of good ec’s and work experience.

we are OOS, son gpa is 3.6 (also from a competitive high school); ACT 29, great college application, etc and no $$ given at all; kind of frustrating. I wonder how they decide who gets $$ and who does not.

while I have no idea about how $$ are awarded maybe I should add that my son also has a lot of AP credits - including Computer Science (as a junior) and he is taking computer science class at a college during this semester.

My D is in-state, Biomed Engrg, honors with $5k merit. GPA 4.4 w/4.0 uw from very competitive HS. SAT’s M/R/W 720/750/800. AP Bio, APUSH, AP US Govt, AP Calc AB, AP Stats, AP Psych. Scholar athlete, 3 sport varsity. ok EC. Received $13k-$23k merit at other private schools, but UConn is where she wants to go!

How do you know if you got in to the STEM Honors Program? I received my acceptance letter and a little card that says “Welcome to UConn’s Stem Scholar Community”. Is that it?

@Jjh2003 how did you get that?

@sabs123‌ I just got a notice for the honors college no mention of stem. Is there a stem scholarship involved?

@Krish400158‌ My letter had no mention of a scholarship. But there was a separate card that said Welcome to Uconn’s Stem Scholar Community.

@momwith4‌ @Krish400158‌ Both my friend and I received 10k + 2.5k stipend in-state. Our test scores weren’t jaw-dropping (she had a 2190 SAT and I had a 31 ACT). However, She’s valedictorian and I’m salutatorian, so we received the presidential scholarship, which offers full-tuition and a one-time $2500 stipend to in-state students who finish 1 & 2 in their class.

Ahhh yes that makes sense, thank you @jjh2003

Interesting, thanks for clearifying @sabs123

If you call Admissions they will explain it…it does not go by GPA…it goes by %/rank…only those in the top 10% at their school get merit/scholarship $ from Admissions…I called because I have seen posts by students with a lower GPA than my D. My D is in top 13%….so we are out of luck even with a 4.2 GPA….as far as SAT scores…the only other way to get $ from Admissions… you must have a particular score for M & R…I do not recall the exact amount it was well over 1300.

That is true but even with a 1450 R+M and top 5% of class the amount is still 5k. For some reason I have a problem with that.

@TLD1267 thanks for the info. . .going to be a hard decision for us

@Str3ss3d0ut Me too, there’s no decision on my status page.

I don’t think I’m in the top 10% of my class though, but I still received merit aid for 5k. (i’m in state)
