Yes, I know it’s not just about the GPA, but the student who was admitted didn’t take rigorous classes, and did not have stellar extracurriculars. I’m not saying she shouldn’t have been admitted, but personally, I find it a bit odd.

And, Standardized test scores don’t measure how well you do in school. I for one have a 3.8 and take very rigorous classes, yet I got an SAT superscore of 1700. There are a lot of other people in my school who take less rigorous classes and have lower GPA’s than I do that got higher SAT scores than me. What does that tell me? Well that tells me that I’m not a good test taker. It doesn’t mean I’m dumb or don’t know the material, it just means it’s not my best area. My GPA reflects how much I’ve worked over the course of my high school career whereas my SAT score just shows how well I can test. It doesn’t mean I didn’t prepare for it, because I prepared for months for the SAT.
So really, a student with a 3.9 and a 1800 is better than a student with a lower GPA and a higher ACT score.

Better? I am not sure how one might define “better”. But what a school really wants to see is high GPA AND test scores.

And unless you know just about everything about that other student, what they do in their summers, their family situation etc etc you cannot just assume a crunch of the numbers is going to give you the answers you seek. I am sorry you’ve been disappointed. But try not to compare like that especially when it really is cold comfort.

Our D was accepted for Philosphy today on the portal, nothing in the mail yesterday (too early for mail today). I’m hoping the mail arrives before D gets home from school!
