Admissions Decisions Class of 2020

@ark3lls Did these friends say where they received this insight from? And maybe a why as well?

Sorry, to clarify… Why would applying to Honors/Scholars AND Morrill delay decision notification? In both cases, you need to be accepted to OSU before you will be considered for either. So why the delay in admission notification?

Since it seems like class rank is a huge factor, it would be nice if people listed that along with their GPA/ACT

@ark3lls I doubt that. I was accepted in the first round of decisions and I applied to both. Same with my friend who was accepted a during the recent release of decisions.

@jumbletumbles I have also wondered whether applicants from high schools that do not provide class rank have an advantage over applicants from schools that rank. My feeling is that it does provide an advantage if a school does not rank. However, i think admissions is still able to make an educated guess of class rank. Admissions officers are knowledgeable of most of the high schools of the students from whom they receive applications, based on observations and reports of the admissions representatives whose territory covers the specific high school and from the Secondary School report and transcript which high schools send as part of a student’s application. Also, if admissions wants to know what range of gpa equates with what range of class rank, I am sure they can get that information directly from high school guidance offices. Or perhaps that information is already contained in the Secondary School report. So I think admissions has a good idea if a 3.5 or a 95 gpa from a particular high school is within top 25% or not.

Guys I am an OOS
SAT 1810 Essay 8
CR + MATH 1270
GPA UW 3.7 Top 17% Applied EA (submitted late October)
Three APs in math and science. NHS, 2 years of one sport and a club

Do you guys think I will hear soon?

If you didn’t hear about your results yesterday you’re going to have to wait until December 18th to get your results and if not then, you’ll have to wait another 2 weeks and so on.
Maybe it’ll be your early Christmas present if you’re lucky.

My son still hasn’t heard anything yet.

@Maple2020 Do you really think your son won’t be accepted?

@KarimChammaa, @Maple2020 did not say she was worried her son wouldn’t be accepted - just that they “hadn’t heard anything yet.” Personally, I took that to be a supportive post to others waiting to hear back because they are definitely not done with their decisions if an applicant with those stats hasn’t heard back yet.

And for college applications, NOTHING is a sure thing. You never know how things will turn out until it’s all over. They don’t have a reputation for Tufts Syndrome as far as I know, but you can never tell when the tides may turn or what all is on a student’s application or essays that may end up working against them. Hubris in thinking any college is a sure thing has gotten more than a few high achievers into a situation where they have nowhere to go the following fall except their parents’ home. :wink: Humble humility is a good thing no matter the stats.

@jumbletumbles What is Tufts Syndrome, if you don’t mind me asking?

I think there are still many with good stats still waiting…Seems to be no obvious pattern as to how OSU is sending out decisions. My S is also still waiting. Applied 10/31, OOS, 4.2 GPA,1990 SAT, 31 ACT, 5 APS, all the rest Honors, NHS 2 Varsity sports, science tutor, many volunteer hours, very good recommendations, and his school doesn’t rank. Keeping our fingers crossed…

@kingx16 basically summarized here: http://www.theprospect.net/admissions-fact-or-fiction-yield-protection-aka-tufts-syndrome-40895
Again though, I haven’t read or seen anything that points to this possibly with OSU.

I appreciated @Maple2020 posting that her son was still waiting exactly for the reasons that @jumbletumbles stated. When you see other students getting decisions, it’s hard to keep from wondering whether the lack of a decision for yourself/your own child is an indication that you are not faring well in the review process.

My son has a W GPA of 4.1 (our school doesn’t rank but I don’t think he would be in the top 25% if they did), SAT 2060 (1450 CR + M), 31 ACT, 5 APs/All Honors classes, OOS and we are still waiting. Ohio State is his first choice so it will certainly be a disappointment if he doesn’t get accepted.

1450 CR+M is very high for OSU, I can’t imagine the person not being admitted … Being OOS is also a favorable thing, I would imagine.

Thanks for those who replied my message. I am very curious instead of worried about the acceptance. Seeing so many acceptances, I am wondering what protocol OSU follows to accept the applicants.

This is a little late since I got my decision during the first wave (November 20th I believe?), but nonetheless I was accepted! Planning to do neuroscience with a pre med track.

OOS
ACT: 29
W GPA: 4.08
Top 3% of my class, member of NHS, class officer, hospital volunteering, and many other extra curricular activities

We also have not heard anything and my son has excellent stats. Weighted GPA 4.5, top 10% of his class, 6 APs and all A’s, ACT 32, SAT subject tests 670 (Physics) and 700 (Math), multiple EC’s-several outside the norm of what many kids have. He applied to the Honors program and guessing this is what has delayed a response back. Good luck to everyone, hoping we will hear something by the 18th :slight_smile:

@SALSRL & @CautiousOptimist - Thank you both.

All - With the Inconsistency of how the admission decisions are being declared. Could the decisions be driven by of or more of these parameters:

Common App submission date
Student File open date (meaning if you submitted your ACT/SAT prior to submitting your Common App)
High School Admission Counselor
High School
Program of Study
Campus of choice
