My son was admitted EA in December. He received his notification for the Maximus via mail on Jan. 20. I just got a postcard in the mail today that reads “watch for an email from Student Financial Aid. Ohio State will soon send an email about your financial aid offer…accepting/declining financial aid is done online…” We filed a FAFSA, but I am sure we will only be eligible for loans.
@trackmbe3 Thanks for the advice. He is leaning hard towards West Point. Waiting on the Naval Academy to decide on an appointment but I would like him to have all the information in front of him. Was a surprise to receive the Maximus but no Honors decision.
My son is also waiting to hear about Honors and scholarships. He applied EA and was accepted in November. He called last week and was told that they’re still sending out scholarship offers, and he’ll find out by the end of February.
The thing that’s so frustrating about this process is the lack of information. Assuming people who post here are being truthful and accurate, it seems completely random when you’re notified. Other schools have been a lot more upfront and seem to have a more organized process for notifying applicants. Especially for the top tier students, other colleges seem to make more of an effort to court those students and try to get them to commit to attending, instead of drawing the whole process out.
I applied on Dec 20. Dose anyone know when should I expect an answer?
I agree completely with xmj9597- still waiting on Honors and scholarships as well. D has been accepted into other schools’ Honors Colleges and received scholarship info., but nothing yet from OSU which is her first choice. Don’t know what to make of the lack of info.- frustrating and leaves a bit of a bad taste in the mouth. At least it’s comforting to know there are others in the same position.
For those of you who have received your scholarship/financial aid offers, how long did you receive the email after you received the card in the mail telling you to watch your email for the information?
I emailed Honors and Morrill for an update on a timeline. Honors stated that it is on a rolling admission through the end of April. Morrill Scholars said they are sending out scholarships through the end of February.
I agree with the bad taste in the mouth. Communication has been poor on OSU’s part.
I believe the postcard that came in the mail regarding checking your email for info. is pertaining to FAFSA (need -based) aid. The merit scholarships seem to be communicated via a letter in your mailbox (post office). Although we got one and did not complete the FAFSA; I am thinking it is an FYI mass mailing to all accepted students.
It looks like the link @osuprof provided during the first round (Nov 2016) has been updated with current acceptance numbers (15845 for Cols). Am I reading that right?
Yes, the postcard was about need based only and they are supposed to send an e-mail when the need based data is posted on the Buckeye account. I just had my son check if this information was updated on his Buckeye account and it was not. Even his merit award is not showing up on his account. Just full tuition cost. I have been totally frustrated with the lack of communication from them.
@jaycbee Looks right. About 15% lower than last year. Is that compared to this exact date last year or just last year altogether I wonder?
@drdillon
It is a comparison with last year’s status at this point last year. They are moving slower this year … likely because of the change in the leadership in that office. Also, they seemed to have deferred out of state high stat applicants this year to improve their yield and appear more selective.
@drjdillon So if acceptances are accurately shown as 15845, this figure would have to be early decision only. In order to ultimately reach their 25,000 acceptance number from last year, looks like OSU will admit another 10,000 RD. If OSU already received 33,000 applications for early decision, they accepted less than half (48% acceptance rate) though not sure if deferrals count as denials etc.
@osuprof do you think this ^ is a good guess of what to expect?
@jaycbee It’s important to note that OSU does Early Action, not early decision, so the acceptances are non-binding.
@JemmaSimmons yes of course…I’m just curious about how many more acceptances there will be. If OSU is striving for a higher yield in the early action portion, then my 10,000 more expectation will be way off.
I am not sure this is accurate… last Friday I attended the admissions session with my daughter, who is already accepted. I may have not paid as close attention, but pretty sure the man leading session said they plan to have a little less freshman this year, I think he said about 7,000 to 7,100. This precise number is what I remember. Sounded like planned on continuing in this direction for future. Not sure if these numbers make sense, or if Columbus campus alone, but got impression they plan to admit less students and be even more selective in future.
Last year’s enrollment report below - 49k applications, 24k acceptances, 7800 enrollment

Then I think I did recall it correct. He said they want less than last year and the numbers are fairly close.
Does anyone know when regular decision applicants will start hearing back?
