Any word on merit scholarships (specifically nat’l buckeye) for anyone?
So many questions but no one seems to have answers /:
@coleosu Still waiting on that here as well. Son qualifies for National Buckeye and Trustee, but haven’t heard anything. I know they said for sure by end of February. We are going there Monday for an Admitted Student Day so hoping to hear by then!
Hi folks. My student is in his second year at Ohio State (OOS). He applied EA by November 1 2015. It seems this is important for OSU. Within 1 month, he was admitted. Two weeks later he was offered the NBS and Maximus. Honors invitation about 2 months later. All notices were by mail. My student applied and was accepted to 12 Universities. When all the offers were done, we picked the top 3 best merit aid offers. We visited OSU privately and his choice was made by the end of the day. My sense of OSU admissions and merit aid is that applications are reviewed in light of the entire applicant pool, as opposed to strict numbers; nothing is set in stone nor is it arbitrary.
My son loves OSU and he is getting a great education. However, OSU is COMPETITIVE! In truth, getting admitted was the easy part. The faculty and the Honors program are great. However, he has had to work very hard to maintain his GPA, Honors status, and scholarships. His first year was difficult, but he was able to maintain a good GPA etc. The second year has been much better.
My hope is that you get a chance to attend OSU. But I feel you should know that this school demanding and difficult. Is it worth attending? Yes!
@coleosu- We are waiting on the national buckeye/trustee combo too. Hoping that today is the day. We are in NJ. Where are you guys?
@Lycurgus10 do you mind me asking your son’s major? My son got deferred for engineering, not sure when he’ll hear back. He got into UT Austin engineering so he has a good option but still anxiously waiting for OSU to make final decisions.
@Bmister - I understand how stressful waiting is. It shouldn’t be much longer that you have to wait for a decision, but I know every day waiting seems like forever. Perhaps keep yourself occupied with finding a back up school that you’d be excited about. I’m not saying I don’t think you’ll get into OSU, but I think you’ve done all you can there for now, and obsessing about it isn’t doing anything but making you crazy. You seem like a very active person, I know how much work it takes to get to Eagle. So put that drive into looking at alternative schools, then when you DO get your acceptance letter to OSU, you’ll have true options. Stay positive! Good luck.
@Mombean Thank you so much, it means a lot! I’ll have to just wait and hope for the best!
@oliver17 My son started as a double major in Mole Genetics and Critical Theory. Made B’s in Calculus and Gen Chem. Not good enough for top Grad school. Now a double major in Sociology and Critical theory (OSU is letting him design his own second major). They give some preferential treatment for Honors students to do this…Now he is bringing home all A’s. He was accepted to UT Austin as well; Plan 2 Honors program, but the Merit aid was only 10k per year. I think UT Austin is a great school if you live in state. OSU engineering is VERY tough. He has friends at Ga Tech that tell him the Math, Chem, and Physics at OSU are about the same level of difficulty. We are pleased with OSU. I think it’s the sheer number of students that make it so competitive.
@Lycurgus10 we are Ohio residence. Thanks for your response. Has your son ever mentioned osu engineering vs. UT? The one draw to Texas is direct admit to Mechanical engineering. If he gets in to OSU engineering he’d have to reapply for his engineering major. This whole process is unnerving.
@lovethearts1 - D was admitted EA…OOS (first school she applied to), we are still waiting on any Merit Aid. She applied to 6 Schools, admitted to all, offered Merit Scholarships to all also. Hoping to hear something soon…OSU is at the top of her list…also - my S also attends OSU and LOVES it
@kritter44- My D was also admitted EA. She applied to 10 schools, admitted to 6 so far. Fingers crossed for merit money here, as it is one of her top choices right now. We are still awaiting word on merit money from a few others too. Glad to hear that your son attends OSU and loves it. What state are you guys in?
@lovethearts1 We live in DE. I think we just expected to hear back as quickly as my son did…her overall “package” is a bit more impressive. Just goes to show you can never be too sure! Good luck to your D…if she chooses OSU, she’s made a great choice!!
@kritter44 - DE- well, maybe the mail is taking longer to reach us. Or maybe they want to keep us on our toes.
My husband got the mail today. Nothing there
Ugh!!! Let’s hope that tomorrow is the day!
Their pattern with the last two rounds was to send on a Friday with people receiving them on Mondays and Tuesdays. But that would be cutting it pretty close to the end of February. I wish we would find out before we head out there this weekend! I suppose I could try calling again if we don’t hear by Friday. Last time they just told me that we should hear by the end of February.
Yes, it would be very nice for you to hear in advance of your trip. I am hoping to hear before we go to, but we aren’t going for another week or so. Fingers crossed for you!
@drjdillon Meant to say it would be nice to hear before we go “too”. Lol.
I am, exact combo. I’m in Illinois. My stats aren’t on the line for national buckeye at 30 ACT and around top 15% class rank (my school stopped ranking a few years ago and that’s where I landed) but I’m just worried I won’t get it since it’s competitive.
