@Setter4life No offense taken This has been quite the roller coaster ride and I do truly believe everyone will end up where they are meant to be. I wish everyone the best of luck in the next chapter.
@trackmbe3 Thank for that post, and at this point, we want to understand why he didnāt make the cut because anyone and everyone Iāve chatted with felt like something went awry. Hereās what I can tell you:
My son goes to a very competitive HS that does NOT rank, but 50% of his graduating class has a 90 or above GPA.
He has taken two honors classes each year and added a college course junior year. He is taking 2 APās and three college classes in his senior year.
He is on the board of two of his three clubs, including one (DECA) which is in his area of interest (Business) where he competes and has made it to the international level.
He applied and was accepted into a dozen colleges in their business program and was accepted into every school, with merit from almost every school (including Kelley School of business, Tulane, University of Maryland, University of Georgia).
He was invited into the OSU Business Scholars Program.
And yes, there are students from his HS, with lower GPAās and lower ACTās that received NB merit money.
I am going to take your advice and see if I can find someone from the HS who can give us answers because this simply doesnāt make sense.
I will keep you posted!
Thank you for the great advice!
@H0llyw00d I sent you two PMs with some additional advice. As Yogi Berra said, āit aināt over until itās overā āyou still have three weeks remaining to see if you can obtain redress.
@trackmbe3 Thank you!
@H0llyw00d You have some excellent choices with many of those acceptances. I looked at many of those schools, but with the exception of UGA. I did not apply to the others due to the lack of decent OOS merit. What is your instate option? I can see why the Buckeye scholarship would be a huge financial incentive vs the other options. As the poster above suggested. Call admissions and see if you can get it done. Otherwise, you do have some very nice options although. I am not sure if they would be financially acceptable. Did you apply to Miami U?
@Setter4life We are from New York, and he got into the Binghamton School of Management which is an amazing option. The only thing thatās missing is the rah-rah to give him the full college experience he desires. Iāve spoken with Admissions, and the reasons were different based on who I spoke with, each reason seemed pretty flimsy to me. The bottom line is that they donāt want him unless he wants to pay full price. Iāve read posts with other students being in the same situation. I have heard success stories of people getting money after the fact from many other schools, I do not know a single person who has been in our shoes with OSU that had success getting NB after awards were distributed. I will try these suggestions but at this point, based on the contact weāve already had with them I have no expectations the result will change.
In the end, I know my son will get a great education at a school that shows him some love. OSU is not the only fish in the sea, just the only one that did not see his value that these other universities have recognized.
My daughter will be attending Drexel University and major in Mechanical Engineering. She only wanted to attend OSU so she could major in Welding Engineering because OSU is the school that has a Welding Engineering program
Does OSU take appeals of merit scholarship decisions?
@Mittens0321 They do not. Trust me, Iāve tried and had every door slammed in my face.
Iām OOS and have been accepted into OSUās Comp sci and engineering program. I applied RD and didnāt apply to special scholarships so I got nothing. Wondering if OSU is really worth that OOS tuition or if I should just eliminate it as an optionā¦
What is OOS?
OOS = Out of state ā¦CC lingo with CC meaning College Confidential not Community College. And just as DD = dear daughter and DS = dear son. IMO = in my opinion. There are several other lingos canāt recall them at the moment. Probably should be a separate thread.
Does anyone know how many people were placed on the waitlist?
I am OOS and have a 3.1 GPA and 1330 SAT and was waitlisted, I will attend if I get in but what are the chances they will be taking the whole or a lot of the waitlist this year?
Many of my very smart OOS friends also got waitlisted which was very surprising considering they received admission and scholarships from more prestigious schools so is this a year where they are making admissions harder and waitlisting great candidates, hopefully, to accept us all after May 1?
@sweetie234 I donāt know if the info/data is available right now for this year. I do know that someone posted on this thread last yearās info. and that it varies from year to year on how many they take from the waitlist, or if they do at all. For example, I believe in 2015 they took the entire waitlist and then in 2016 they took no one at all from the list. Last year they took more than half from it. But as I stated before in earlier post in reference to your friends with the high stats. Last year there were kids with high stats on the waitlist as there is this year. This is why it is important to know that OSU selects based on a holistic scale of 10 criteria, and just because their stats are high that does not guarantee admission. They also look st the essays and the other criteria, I got in with a 3.7 and a bunch of friends I know with higher stats were denied. Hope this helps and good luck to all on the waitlist. I hope everyone is selected this year from the list!
The acceptance rate at OSU is 12.7 percent higher this year than last year. Basically about 2800 more students have been admitted over the year before. Based on this figures it does not look good for those wait listed. It is all about yield and more people have committed as wellā¦
@Setter4life Can you please tell me how you know the number of people who have committed? Is this public information? Just trying to figure out chanceā¦
Also, does anyone know if waitlist is prioritized in anyway or is it random offers? Thanks!
Yes, this is public information

Scroll down to the Columbus campus numbers and you can see figures by majors etc, It compares year today 18 vs year today 17ā¦ It seems that OSU is trying to create a larger class for 2018 than 2017 and perhaps this is the reason that they have admitted a higher number of students this year. It does not mean that those who have been wait listed will not be accepted at a later date. But with May 1st fast approaching, it would be best to make sure other plans are made.
I talked on the phone with an admissions counselor and their waitlist is not ranked but it is prioritized by who was first to accept their offer on the waitlist, so once they know how many have committed they will be sending people off of the waitlist on a rolling basis.
You can google "common data set " and get this data - look at section C2. Last year OSU Columbus campus offered wait list to 5,051 applicants. 1,283 accepted a spot on the wait list and 852 were admitted off the wait list. However the year before it shows 2,075/497/0.
Anybody know how many spots are open so far for next year if any? I know osu was offering more spots this year. I wish I could find out how many have accepted / declined admission
