Admissions Discussion

On the nursing question - I wouldn’t be overly concerned yet. Her stats are competitive. I think I read somewhere that the nursing department has only sent out a handful of offers. As for Baylor and TCU, they are both rolling admissions to pre-nursing. They are quick to send out acceptances to all majors, along with scholarships. They’re expensive private schools and don’t have the same admission restrictions or competitiveness of in-state tuition state schools. Please don’t misinterpret whet I’m saying - they’re both excellent schools for nursing (Baylor is only 2 years on main campus, then 2 years in Dallas - but very, very strong program and placement opportunities). After living in TX for many years and watching college application craziness for the past 6 - I’ve never seen anyone rejected by either school if the student is willing to pay the premium tuition. To lure the higher test score/grades/ranks - they offer better scholarship money. And the kids who attend Baylor and TCU absolutely love their schools… Congrats to your daughter for her acceptances! I hope she hears from MN soon!

Decision: Accepted with Gold Scholarship and Research Scholarship

International Applicant: Indian immigrant

SAT Score: 2330 (800 M, 800 W, 730 CR), Only 2 attempts, 1st attempt 2160

SAT II Score: 2380 (800 Math, 800 Chem, 780 Phy), Only 1 attempt

Grades: All A+ from grade 9-11. Mid-Sem grades in 12th also all A+. (About 2% drop in marks from grade 11th to 12th, still, overall grades are A+)

ECs: Several National and International Level wins (since my country is quite small, national wins won’t matter much).

Leadership: President Student Council in my school.

Could somebody please explain what honors are? Do I need to apply for them separately?

@Want2BAGopher‌ I applied for nursing in August and have yet to hear back too. Your daughters stats are better than mine, however. The average ACT is approx a 29 and most of those admitted are in the top 10% of their class, according to an admissions counselor I talked to, so your daughter has a good chance in my opinion. Minnesota’s nursing school is selective - they only want about 100-120 freshman to get the freshman nursing guarantee.

Finally got the carefully considered notification! How long does the turn around usually take? Plus it’s christmas break :’(

@bug2996 my D noticed the “carefully considered” message on a Saturday in October and received her acceptance notification by early Monday morning. Hope yours goes the same way! I know that in some other colleges she applied to she’s supposed to get a response by calendar year-end so I highly doubt that the admissions process in general gets the same time-off that the academic divisions do.

That same day, the tracker changed to complete. 10 days later, it changed to carefully considered. And now, 2 days later, I got my decision. Hope I get some aid!

I applied August 17th but they got all my stuff around november 15th- my tracker changed last thursday/ friday I’m not too sure and I just got my decision today! Yay

@bug2996‌ Is your IB predicted out of 42 or 45? Thanks.

@internatindian, scholarships do not appear on portal, at least for students in US. Honors does show up on portal. I don’t know about email as S never checks his email, but at least in the US, scholarship info is mailed to home. You might call or email the scholarship/FA office or try someone at UMN who works with internationals. I’ve noticed some schools handle the materials differently when they need to be mailed out of the country. An international, determined2300, who posted here about acceptance, also posted on another thread a couple of days ago that scholarship notice came by email.

@anxious00‌ 45 lol if only I hadnt taken chem or screwed up my english…

@celesteroberts‌ Does it take a while for Honors to show up after the admission decision?

@bug2996‌ Not bad! Congrats!

UPDATE: I emailed (~Dec 22) the admissions office asking about checking on our daughters application. They wrote back the next day and wanted to speak to us and our daughter on the phone. That same day the application tracker changed to “carefully considering your package”. On Dec 24 they called and told our daughter she’d been admitted and also offered the Freshman Nursining Program. Nice Christmas present! In the conversation with the admissions office - they restated that the window had just closed for early applications Dec 15. From reading the messages on this site and others - there are kids being admitted earlier in the fall if they have the grades/sports etc. I get it. But it seems like if you have are a stronger applicant and get an application in early - you shouldn’t have to wait until Christmas to hear from the school.

BOTTOM LINE: They were very nice in the admissions office - and our daughter got in.

Probably just a couple of days. Ours changed in ~2 days.

Anybody know the Facebook page to class of 2019? I can’t seem to find it
