Admissions: Essay & Extracuriculars

It's available online along with the application, correct?

I'm just wondering how it works. Is it just another page given during the admissions process that you have to fill as you go along or can you upload it to admissions whenever you're ready (days or weeks after first filling the application)?

Is it possible to get the questions beforehand as well (i.e. now)

When do we mention our EC and resume experience? During the application?

I know the deadline is march but Im just so very excited.

How about you Just give Columbia a damn call!?

1-212-854-2522

Long distance and obscene wait time on the phone makes it a last resort :(

Skype Out, 2.1 c per min.

My parents dont have Skype Out (though ill admit that its a great looking plan) so for us its more of 2,30$ a minute.

okay, I don't know much as I'm only going to be a junior in the fall. However, I think that if you just want to see all the questions beforehand, try looking at last year's application. According to Columbia's website, this and last year's applications are almost the same accept for some minor changes. I hope this helps. ;)

Just googling "Columbia application" and visiting the first page will answer all your questions. Sorry, but although I'm open to answering questions, I don't like to waste time when the person has no idea how to research a simple application process.

Also, the deadline is most certainly NOT in March.

Turn that frown upside down!

1) The deadline is in January
2) Essays and EC fill out spots are on the app online
3) You can upload your essay whenever you're ready as long as it's before the deadline.
4) If you haven't filed part 1 of the application yet you can go to the website and view a pdf of the application to see all the questions.
5) Your EC's and work experience are all part of the second portion of the app.

I think if you really cared you would have known most of this stuff. It's pretty rudimentary and evident if you just visit the admissions site.

Yes I do have access to a phone. No I did not know what skype out was. Yes, my international rates are indeed very expensive up here in Quebec so I would like to save it for one call at the end of my research. Yes, I am what is considered very below middle class though I wouldn't say poor.

And thank you Karen I appreciate the answers, and yes I do care. :) But because Berkeley's (the school I've been most heavily researching) procedure is so radically different for international transfer students (getting prerequisites petitioned, language course validation, applying to UC by November, and then applying to Berkeley) I expected it to be the same for Columbia. Glad to see it's not. Application up here has always been local and never involved anything but grades which were directly transfered from one school to another.

And this page does say that the deadline for Columbia is indeed March (the 15th to be exact): http://www.studentaffairs.columbia.edu/admissions/applications/transfer.php

Okay...I didn't know you were from Canada. Either you didn't put that or i read over it. sorry. I would have cut you some slack then. And i know about how different the UC system is. I spent all last week researching it cause i'm interested in UCSD to an extent. It is so vastly different. With reference to the Canada thing, I know what it's like in Belgium (kinda similar to Canada in a lot of ways) so i understand how different the US system is. Good luck with all your apps.

That's ok, I wasn't offended. :)

The extracurricular and essay precision along with the 'pdf of the application' tip were great helps. Good luck with UCSD to you as well.

If you're transferring I found this link which has more direct and collective information regarding admission: http://reentry.berkeley.edu/
It helped me.

I'm not transferring. In fact, UCSD is one of the four universities I really can't decide upon so if I don't get in it will make my life easier. Just as long as I get into one of the four schools. Otherwise I'm screwed. lol.

I don't get it why wud someone say u to call since ur questions may possibly be answered faster by a columbia kid! anyway, I advice u to PM a certain poster who u think might know the answers (so presumably who posts a lot of 'benign' comments at this columbia section! lol.)

Sorry at seeing people behaving like this w/ u! don't worry, u'll soon get used to it......look at the Parent's Thread for a moment (there's probably thread continuing currently on a topic of why kids at CC behave like this....not all of course)

visit the Cafe once in a while, u'll feel a lot better........we people are NEVER harsh or anything like that! ;)

By and large, and more than any other group of people, New Yorkers:

1) Hate having their time wasted, and
2) Are willing to speak their mind and tell people what they think of 'em

If you're coming to columbia, get used to it. Just because other parts of the country or other countries may place a lower value on time, or on propriety and sucking it up even when you don't have a relationship with the person, doesn't mean that's ideal, and it certainly isn't typical here. Example: everyone who goes to california, and orders a coffee or goes to a deli, will have over-happiness smacked in the face by smiling girls with high-pitched voices. "too happy, too fake" is a common complaint. And it IS fake, nobody's actually that happy to serve you or put up with your BS. Wouldn't you rather have someone who showed how they felt, something you could rely on even if it's negative? New Yorkers would.

Is that the best of all possible worlds? Maybe not, but you'd better get used to it.

Actually, I found Denzera's advice to be quite helpful. The attitude and environment are important things to consider when you're choosing a college. You need to know what kind of people you're going to be surrounded by.
