Admissions essay topics?

So I'm almost done with junior year and I'm thinking about essay topics. I have one specific question:
From what I've heard, the essay should be about something that the reader can't learn from reading the rest of your application. I have a brother with autism, and I think I could write a good essay about growing up with that and the impact it's had on me and how it influences many things I do. BUT: Will this be viewed as like an "excuse essay"? It's a big part of my life and it's something that won't be seen elsewhere on my application but I don't want the reader to think that I'm trying to get pity. So I would really appreciate some opinions. Do you think this would be a good topic? And do you have any advice in particular about it? Thanks.

***There isn't anything I'm trying to excuse (my grades and extra curriculars are pretty good), but I heard that this type of thing can be thought of as an excuse

absolutely do it.
don’t make it sound like you’re vying for pity or that you’re making excuses for something (ie bad grades, even if that is the case)

many people have done essays like the one you suggested. make yours stand out. good luck :)

I think it would be a great essay! I think anything you are passionate about works - just avoid cliche terms/phrasing.

don’t make excuses in it. If that works, then it should be a good essay.
