Admissions interview next week, any tips?

Can anyone give me any advice for an interview at Case I have next week? It's my first one and I don't know much, so anything is appreciated. Thank you!!

Don’t know much about interviews or don’t know much about Case?

Don’t be too scared! Colleges want people to apply as much as you want to be accepted. The purpose of these interviews is to try to see you beyond your application. It is a great opportunity to be able to talk about all of your activities as a whole.

What does a college want?
Intellectually curious students who want to contribute to the community.

So if you learned a language (foreign language, computer language) for fun, don’t just mention it but say how you came to want to do that.

If you have volunteered, don’t say " I volunteer at the hospital" but “I am thinking about pre-med, so I decided to volunteer at the hospital to explore that but I came to find out how much I like working with people there.”

Be interesting!
Don’t just answer with one word answers.

Case is a Univ that takes “interest in the Univ.” into account in admissions. So doing an interview is great.

Hello, Regifeathers!

I completed my interview for CWRU in May, and I remember being so nervous I could hardly stand it! If you’re like me, the best piece of advice I can give you is that interviewers are not “testing” you or trying to intimidate you; they genuinely want to get to know what kind of person you are. The interview is more like a back-and-forth conversation. Oftentimes, your interviewer will interject and tell you about themselves and the school to make you more comfortable. They understand that you are nervous and you will even have the opportunity to sit and grab a coffee/tea before you enter the interview room that has big cozy couches.

Some of the questions he asked me were:
What do you like to do in your free time?
Why are you considering Case Western?
How did you spend your summer / gap year (if applicable)?
What kind of extracurricular activities did you do in high school?
What are your considerations for your major?
Do you have any questions at all about Case?

Just answer respectfully and truthfully. It helps to look up a little about the school beforehand! Asking here on College Confidential already shows you’re going the extra mile in your college search; just take a deep breath and do your best! :)

Have a great day!

its july, why do have an interview now? the above advice is good

For what it is worth, my daughter (who is an incoming CWRU freshman) did not interview and was accepted early action. I don’t believe they place as much emphasis on the personal interview as some other schools. As the other poster said- be yourself and try to show some of your personality. And, DON’T bring your parents into the interview, make sure to turn off cell phone, wear decent clothes.

I actually think the interview, for my daughter, may have been the tipping point. Her stats were borderline for Case and, although I think her CA essay was good and her recs certainly helped, she interviews well and I think that pushed her from deferred to accepted. She just finished her freshman year- absolutely loves Case and knows she is lucky to be there and that she made the best choice for her.

That being said, I agree with @Bizzylizzy‌ - it is more conversational, try to relax, show them something about you that is not on the application, ask a couple intelligent questions, and think about the questions above so you can answer easily and interestingly.

And as @laurapb23‌ said, do all those common sense things!

Good luck!

@Regifeathers‌ I see now that your interview was probably over by the time we replied…
Please tell us how it went…
