Admissions Officers are quite aware of CC

This taken from the Yale admitted student site, from the message board.

"You've posed an interesting question about college confidential. I think that the website, itself, is a great tool for students who want to commiserate about the goods and the bads of the admissions process. There is so much national hype about getting into college, and a forum for discussing and processing the hype is something for which all high school students (and their parents) are grateful, I'm sure.

That said, I agree that sometimes the content of the college confidential boards can capture some of the more negative sides of this process and, at times, even breed these negative vibes. In these instances, I worry that a forum such as college confidential magnifies problems that already exist with regard to college admissions."

Hmm.

what thread was that on?

Ask an admissions officer I think.

I agree with most of the statement. On the plus side, reading at CC can really demystify the admissions process and provide info not available to families in schools that don't send many kids to elite colleges. I wish CC had been around when I was guiding my first kid through the admissions process.

On the other hand, there's probably too much emphasis on stats (we do have members with outstanding stats, of course) simply because they are something that can be compared. There are also lots of folks who overemphasize the importance of getting into particular schools and tend to dismiss many schools that would provide an equal or better undergraduate experience.

Fortunately, there are lots of level-headed members who try to keep things sane. We try to do our part by highlighting sensible points of view, like those of MIT's Jones: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=125007

Perhaps one of the Yale admissions lurkers will elect to join the discussion publicly sometime as a College Rep. (hint... :))
