Now, there is contradicting information on the AFA website. One page says the Panel reviews the file “as soon as” it is turned in, while another says the panel begins meeting weekly in november. my alo tells me the november timeline is the accurate one, but i wish it were “as soon as” Anyone have anything to say about this based on personal experience or otherwise?
Thanks.

Funny thing is, I asked my son's counselor at the academy, once the application is 100% complete, and hoping to be in the early selection, how many get looked at during the early period and when. She said that about 1000 get looked at during the early selection period and that they start looking through them at the end of September.

Maybe they spend the month of October selecting the early candidates and start sending LOA/Appointments by the end of October or November. Obviously it's hard to say. There's also no way of telling when the deadline is for being considered during the early selection period. She did say that if your application was completed and submitted by 1 Sept, then you WILL be looked at during the early selection period. That if you application came in complete by 1 Oct, that there was no guarantee that you would be considered during the early selection period.

They obviously must be quite conservative during the early selection process. They pretty much must go with the "No Brainers" applications based on past scores and points. If too generous, they could potentially deny some later in March who have higher scores than someone possibly selected earlier. Definitely a difficult task to consider.

Then, you have to worry that if you aren't selected in the early round, do you actually "lose" points or looked down on by the committee when they start selecting the rest? I.e. He/She didn't look good enough in the first round, therefore lets hold off on this one. Very difficult indeed. Later... Mike....

There is little rhyme or reason to the early selection process. The majority of Offers of Admission have been presented in the month of March. Early offers begin around October and roll through February. As Hornet will tell you not getting an offer in October doesn't seal your fate. Last year many of the current C4C's got there admission between Oct and Feb. I can tell you I have a C4C who got her offer from WP in early December and AFA in January, and still wonders why they took her early.

One thing all prospective candidates have to remember, there are many candidates that are in prep school and will not be offered an appointment until March or April. Even though the prep school students are are not guaranteed a spot, it is theirs to loose.

My son was not offered his appointment until the spring. He enjoyed his time at the prep school, and the local college in the spring. Made the deans list, went out about every night to friends and played many games of football, Capture the Flag, Cops and Robbers. (We did not have the bubble wrap as you will hear on here.)

I never made him sit at home and worry whether or not he was going to get an appointment.

And believe it or not, NOT ONE PHONE CALL was made to the Academy to find out if he was on any Early list, Late list, if is application was looked at or anything of that nature. I guess he was awarded his appointment on his OWN accomplishments.

Just relax, if it happens it happens....if not then you should have a backup plan.

I finished my application at the very beginning of September and got a letter of assurance in October. Last year the board first met I think the second or third week of October, and from that point on, it's sort of a rolling admissions process until March... they review your file as soon as it's completed (well, as long as they're not really backed up), so it's best to get stuff done early so that your application is in the short stack. :)

My son had to go thru all the same steps that all candidates go thru. While at the Prep School, he did phone interviews with the members of Congress and the Prep school sent in the required paper work (recommendations). In the Spring of 2007 is when he recieved his appointment. It was no guarantee, but the chances were much better. It is unfortunate, but there were students in his prep school class that did not recieve an appointment.

If they start reviewing packages as soon as they are completed, then we have to assume it's the counselors or someone else other than the board. There's a lot of packages completed prior to october when the board convenes.

It would be nice if an appointment was to come for my son in October or early November. If not, no big deal. Just would be nice to get it out of the way and not have to worry about all the other applications. It's important to put in a couple of backup colleges in case something happens. Of course, applying to backup colleges is something we were doing anyway. It would just be nice to have things figured out early. It takes away the temptation of some of the other offers. later.... Mike....

The councelors assemble the packages. Once complete the admission counciling supervisor reviews and signs off on the package. The package is then presented to the admissions panel. This will happen beginning in Oct. The first admission offers will begin then. If the candidate has a presidential nomination available because of parental military service it will likely be an offer of admission, otherwise an LOA contingent on Congressional/VP nomination. Like Redhead said above having your package complete as soon as possible is a good thing. The Admission's panel will meet regularly (read almost weekly) and review all those completed packages, and revisit the ones passed over previously. You will begin to see the ecstatic proclamations of acceptance soon, but if it doesn't happen a week after your package shows complete DO NOT LOSE FAITH....as Hornet has explained the majority of offers will occur in March.

Definite thanks for the explanation "ds". My son's application has been complete since July 19th. So hopefully, they've all reviewed and signed off on it and it's ready for the panel to review. He does have a presidential so hopefully everything will fall right into place. Thanks again. Later... Mike...
